I'm trying to get my car ****oned up and got stuck on a spring tonight. I remember hearing it fall off but can't remember where it goes. It looks the same as the spring that goes between the brake pedal and frame but it's a bit longer (unless i'm getting them mixed up). I found it in a picture in my manual here http://chevy.tocmp.com/1949_53shop/06engine/6_104.HTM but can't find mention to it when I looked. I see a hook coming off the frame further towards the front end but can't connect the dots. It's probably something stupid but I'd rather put it where it belongs.

its probably the clutch return spring, its a long spring and then it contects to an s shaped hook that hooks to the frame just underneath the emergency brake pull.

where does one hook onto the clutch...i figured this was probably what it was for but there's no hole on the pedal like on the brake pedal.

If I recall correctly, the clutch return spring just hooks on to that round bar that's bolted to the clutch fork.
