I buy what I like, each issue is judged on its own merits.
And just because I bought the previous issue, doesn't automatically mean I will buy the next.

    All retro, flea market stuff.

For car features, based on aesthetic and mechanical judgement of editors: Rodder's Journal (probably only modern one on list), American Rodder BEFORE current ownership, R&C up to maybe 1962 and for a while during one of their revivals, Hop UP both new and old.
Technical worth: Car Craft before muscle car era, HRM in the days of Don Francisco and Racer Brown, American Rodder until recent sad changes, and the several wonderful series of tech books and annuals put out by Petersen about '54-64.
Also a surprise winner: Street Rodder--I am repelled by about 3/4 of the cars they feature and occasionally horrified by the lack of basic design knowledge, but they print some good stuff on metalworking and sometimes good in depth tech. I guess they are so big they can't help including some good stuff...
I think most HAMBERS would be better off looking for magazines at the fleam arket rather than at the newsstand.

I've been reading and subscribe to R & C since 61 (when they were in print) I know what to expect from it and am pleasantly urprised when they exceed those expectations, which is regularly the past few months.
I also subscribe to HOTROD and it's worth every penny of the 86¢ per issue the subscription cost me.
I can't complain there, in fact, some months it's very good loke this month with the spread on Vic Edelbrock Sr's car.
I buy Rodder's Journal when it is in the stores because I don't trust the post office not to ****** it up, so I'll pay full price.

Wife subscribes to AutoWeek and It's a really great magazine considering it's turn around time is within ONE WEEK! This week Denise McCluggage ripped TOYOTA and other SUV makers a new *** about their commercials showing SUVs ripping across the countryside at speeds that do destroy the dozen or so cars they go thru making the commercial "do***enting" how you too can drive like the wind, but don't bother to tell you that you'll be paying for that wreck out of pocket when it happens and your insurance only covers on paved road wrecks.
Yes, I think the editorials are a big part of any magazine and if they are off base I question the rest of the magazine too.

Last night I was reading thru, again two of the best little pages done, ever.
That would be the two and only KUSTOMS by TSR
    published by Killer.
    Two Great little magazines.
(Maybe a few others should have gone out at the peak of their carriers too. Quality is always better than quan***y)

I also sometimes pick up a copy of Wooden Boat because it's about the nautical counterparts of home built cars.

I read HOPUP but it's an annual, so it's different from what I think of as a "magazine"

I used to regularly read a magazine Weesner was editor of...

Weesner used to be editor of "Wooden Boat?"

    That explains a lot.

HAMB illistrated: this month cover is the big olds and our top less cruzin buddy. Inside the cover we have "the world acording to Germ" page 69. Ryan's editorial is page 1. Chopolds and Choprods come through with tech this month on cutting up 50 year old metal. Safariknut and Brush alternate pulling lines on whatever Chopolds and Choprods cut up. All this and more every month in HAMB illistrated.

    Huh?
Not that I know of, but Ganahl used to be editor of SUNSET Magazine. Does that "explain" anything?

"I also sometimes pick up a copy of Wooden Boat because it's about the nautical counterparts of home built cars."
That's interesting--I found myself being ****ed into "Wooden Boat"'s world a few years ago. I bailed when I caught myself sketching boat plans--I really, really don't need any more ways to spend my money and time!
I religiously avoid old train, WWII aviation, military vehicles, and boat stuff, sometimes successfully, for that reason. How come there's so much neat hardware and so little time and money in the world???

Well I recently used a how-to out of a WB when I needed to caulk the seams on the new wood planked box lid on my 40GMC.
That part and some parts overlap a lot!

And B***, I was editing it while you were posting, I guess, because I saw your post after I changed it.. [IMG]

I'll read ANYTHING that contains home-buildable ideas for modifying Hot Rods...or trucks, Stockcars, planes, Rock-crawlers etc! You name it!
Fabrication is FABRICATION...and the more of it you expose yourself to, the better your able to adapt your thinking to a given need.

Current mags - Rodder's Journal, Shop Rag, HOP UP, occasionally Street Rodder and Rod & Custom, rarely Hot Rod.
Old mags - early HOP UP ('51-'53), Hot Rod Annuals '54-'61, misc. Rod & Custom. Probably my all-time favorite is the Nov '73 issue of Rod & Custom: 1st feature on Pete & Jake's coupes, plus tech on chopping a top (Jake's), chopped coupe feature, etc. 2nd favorite is Feb '73: boxing a '32 frame, hiboy '32 cabriolet, etc. Next in line would be the R&C's with the 'Wiring Simplified' series, and the Bud Bryan AV8 build-up ('68-'73). IMO those are the best tech articles from any era. The early mags had very little tech, and it was often incorrect, and missing lots of details. Most later tech stuff is 'Install my 1-800 kit', although the paint & bodywork articles are pretty good.

Currently, Custom Rodder and Ol Skool Rods are the only two that I buy and read each issue.

Popular Hot Rodding RULED in the 70s, but turned to **** in the mid 80s,

Hot Rod was cool while Leonard Emanuelson had the reigns,

    Autobuff was cl***ic [IMG],

Cars Illustrated in the late 80s was a gut-buster...those guys were WAY outta control!

I also dug the old American Rodder, CARtoons and Super Ford once upon a time!

What? Nobody's going to mention Tex Smith's Hot Rod Mechanix? Not many issues, but the best magazine ever published, IMO. It was about 75% tech and it followed the "Dollar A Pound Roadster" build up. I wish ol' Tex could have kept it going, I still reread them and get new ideas and insights. Swap meeters should snap up any Tex Smith Publishing books and magazines. Good, good stuff…

Definately MAGNETO for me. It takes all of the style points. Altough I like to read the other magazines, they are just designed like you TYPICAL cookie cutter magazine. MAGNETO is aesthetically pleasing!!

  30. No ones mentioned Rolls and Pleats yet - Hard to come by but worth the effort IMO
