I bought this exhaust gas ****yser and was wondering how old it could be. Also it works with a 6 volt battery (which it doesn't have) but I don't think you get these batteries any more. It's a squarish battery about 2 x 2 inch with one contact in the center and one towards the side. If someone knows what I'm talking about then I'd like to know what the polarities of the two contacts are.
wow looks mid 50's or very early 60's..some of those large flashlight batteries are 6 volt maybe it would work off one of those?
I think the battery you are describing would be called a 6V Lantern battery... obsolescent but probably still available at a good hardware store. I recently saw an adapter to replace one with a group of D-cells in a special plastic box to fit and contact like the square one. The lantern batteries are old-tech batteries that are expensive and short-lived, so I think the D's would be better all around.
The company is still around if your really interested I would send them the questions. They can even probably get you the spare parts and manual. Here is the site. http://www.cryptontechnology.com/
they should still sell 6v lantern batteries at lots of stores, have you looked? my guess is 60s, usually there are date codes inside on the electronic parts if you are really concerned about it. some close up pics of the circuitry would be very helpful.
Kewl! Thanks for that link. I'll go and check it out. For some reason that didn't come up in my Google searches. Thanks for the info on the batteries Bruce and Squirrel. To be honest I don't really know lantern batteries and can't recall seeing anything like that in our local shops. Then again, it could also be that I've never looked for it before. I'll look around at some of the smaller hardwares that keep near everything. Some of them stock all kinds of "weird" stuff that the larger ones don't.
Does it look like this? http://www.homedepot.com/webapp/wcs...d=10053&productId=100036695&categoryID=502620 You might also search on amazon.com. If these don't work, search on batteries.com, they will have industrial batteries that are similar to lantern batteries, but different case styles, voltages, etc. When all else fails, google it!
