Well today at the Hog Jog car show i striped my first car. let me tell you, striping my first car in front of a whole park full of people. is harsh. the music they where playing was awful. i tried to turn my head phones on but the d.j.'s music was to loud. i could hardly even put my brush down on the paint i was so nervous. i have done a ton of striping on panels and signs and guitars of my own. but this is the first time i have done anyone else's stuff. And for pay too!!!! lmao. so anyways it didn't turn out as good as i would have liked. but not bad for my first car i guess. good god i was nervous though lol. (I hope i didn't post this in the wrong place) if i did i'm sorry.
Not too bad man! plus, i dont think it would mess that truck up any more than it already is if you screwed up.
harsh...lol. but a little true. it was mismatched some but you do what you can with what you got you know...
i'll be at the road rocket rumble this next weekend. if anyone wants some stripes laid down for cheap shoot me a pm.
great job! it will get easier everytime you do it, i striped my own car at a show first so if i messed up i wasnt gonna have a pissed off customer
lmao that's a good idea. i will do that when i get a rod. unfortunately i'm in the market after i sell my truck.
that looks so stupid. you are a complete ass. you should commit suicide immediately and stop being my competition
Hey looks good..I can stripe and i didnt even do my own car..mostly because i dont have the self confidence it takes to do something like that..especially with all those eyes on ya and on someone elses ride too..ta boot/...hats off ta ya!
not to be harsh but the lines are great but i think it looks like the lettering and web were done by some one eles
just a suggestion when striping in front of a lot of people just zero in on your work and dont mind all the people trust me it helps when i was striping at this years gnrs show i looked up and there was like 100,000 people in the buillding and i hate people at least large groups make me nervious
not sure which you are saying is better. but the web on the rear end cover was a bitch because it was rusted to hell, and I've only done a few lettering things, the truck as a whole was rough so it was hard to get a decent line in some places. but definitely thanx for the input
Looking pretty good.It brought back a lot of memories of the first car I ever striped. In a couple of months it will be 50 years since that day and I can remember it like it was yesterday. It is good that you got some pictures;I never did and would pay dearly for some if they existed.Unfortunately both the car and the owner have long since gone on to another place.I do have a pic or two of stuff I did before I did the car but they aren't the greatest quality. Working in front of a crowd should not be a problem if you focus on the job.Like anything it gets better as time goes by. I know several veteran stripers who absolutely refuse to have anyone around(especially the customer)while they are painting.Different strokes I guess.
it definately was good though because i had been striping stuff in the back of my truck at carshows for quite a while (signs, cooler, etc...) and no one seemed to even know what i was doing. but then i did it on a car and it clicked. and people where more interested. especially since i am 17 and know what hot rod pinstriping is. the reaction of the people was cool. but like you guys said, it will definately help to zero in on the striping. thanx for the feedback guys!
ill be honest, please dont strip anyone elses cars till you got some more stripe time under your belt.... im just trying to help you out, because some guy is going to see your lines like that on his car and be real pissed..... i can stripe some, but the hell if im gonna try striping someones car until i got some serious good lines. ive done peoples dashes.. but not the whole car. im not trying to be an asshole.. im just being honest with you, and i hope that you practice even harder now. good luck man
1) i never pinned the guy down and told him i was going to stripe his car. he asked me to do it (previously seeing the striping that i had done laying in front of my pickup. 2) the guy paid 25 freekin bucks for me to do that. it wasn't like he payed me 200 bucks to stripe his car. if he had wanted a professional job he would have gone to a guy that had been striping for 70 years and could lay them down like a decal. 3) everyone has to start somewhere. i've been sitting at home striping panels and mirrors and anything else of mine that i could get my hands on for close to a year now. i had no intention of striping anyones car but he came up and asked me too. i warned him that it wasnt going to be a pro job.... his exact reply "i don't give a fuck man it's a rat rod" 4) i know the truck job looks like shit. but man when you have some random guy come up to you that looks like he could kick anyones ass and ask you to stripe his rat rod. and you go over and are striping right next to the speakers blaring greased lightning remix shit and you're nervous as fuck give me a call and we'll talk. the guy was ecstatic about the job. and if he hadn't been i would have sanded his car down and resprayed the primer myself. 5) thanks for the advise but i'm gonna keep on striping some pictures of some stuff I've done of my own. in my own environment, with my own music: thanx
lookin good dude, and hey, dont let the man get ya down, guys should be happy that there are young kids like you learning to do this, and ur stripin is bad ass dude, hell of alot better than me, you just pull lines outa thin air lol, but yeah KEEP STRIPING!!!!!
Hell, man you did fine! If the guy wants you to stripe his car after he sees your work, what the hell, go for it! I have striped in front of large groups, it can be a bitch. My work doesnt suffer from people watching me, I just am uncomfortable with the attention. I like being the guy were alot people know my stuff but have no idea what I look like. Keep it up, your on the right path.
you took me all wrong... i wasnt ragging on your stuff, im just trying to give you some constructive criticism. i dont think you should have striped any of those things you posted YET! i just think you should practice more. im no expert. but look at the ones you posted and ask yourself "what about this could i make better". then when you find something you need to improve on, take out a panal. and do the part you are having trouble with OVER AND OVER till you got it. then move on to any other problems you see. the guy who taught me made me do circles for hours; for days, and S curves. its boring, and it sucks, but i can tell you, once you get it down youll be much more happy with your stuff. remember "what could i do better". take care.
Hey Kid, Keep your chin up and stay at it. I think ya did a great job for your first paid gig, and the guy definitely got his $25 worth on his low buck rod. Regarding someone getting mad... considering you had your guitar, toolbox, cooler and signs all on display, the guy knew exactly what he was getting and he was stoked with the work you did and the bargain he got. Yeah, I'm not crazy about the lettering either, but stay cool and keep it up and you will continue to refine your work. Take the praise and the constructive criticism both, but don't let it get ya down, and remember everyone will have different opinions and tastes. I think ya dun good. Signed, DAD
I just picked up a brush a year or two ago. Still haven't done a car or striped in public. By the time you're my age you'll have 25 years with a striping brush in your hand... just imagine how good you'll be by then. You're off to a good start. Keep laying those lines.
thanks guys. ass dragger: i meant no disrespect and i know what your saying. striping the same line over and over again helps a ton. i have done my fair share of that as well. but i also think that experience comes with putting yourself out there and doing the real thing. i've only been stripin for a little under a year. and i am teaching myself. i'm still working on it. but if a guy wants some cheap stripes laid on his primer and doesn't care what they look like. i'm gonna throw em' for him. all in all thanks for the criticism.
i'll chime in because i dont believe in post and praise pinstriping. congrats on getting a paid job. i remember my first, but you're really not ready. now that you've gotten it out of your system, go on back and fix all the things that all young stripers struggle with. work and work and work until your eyes bleed. remember something... its easier to build a solid reputation than to repair a bad or damaged one. what do i mean? when you're in an environment where there is something to be compared to and that comparison piece outclasses yours, you are now "that crummy $25 rat striper". if you wanna keep striping rat rods for beer money then you're on the right path. if you want to actually excel, then study, practice and learn from those who go before you. dont fall into the trap of being OK with being a 2nd rate striper. you'll only wind up being the alternative to a professional. you said it yourself. if you keep putting out work before you're ready to start doing better than average work, thats what people will associate you with. for the most part you've got the attitude that it takes to keep on, but don't do so in the face of good advice. people who cannot recieve criticism will generally remain mediocre.
i know my lines look like shit. but what this whole story boils down to is that i was striping some stuff at the back of my truck and a guy asked me to lay some cheap stripes down for him. i don't intend to be the rat striper. i am practicing on a regular bases. i just posted this, mainly because i hadn't done many posts on the hamb. thanx guys Tony
