Just tossing the idea of Moving up there in the Future and was wondering
where is a good place to live? Close to SF but not in the heart..looking for Vintage Houses (40's-60's) somewhat close to water? Good neighborhood..ETC..

    What would you suggest?

Sick of the LA car scene.

    Thanks

How close to SF? Which water? The bay or the ocean.

You will find 40's-60's era homes all over the bay area, that's not a problem. Are you looking to rent or own? I know that your coming up for the shows in July, just tack on an extra day or two and drive around. Have a look at Craigslist, too.

    See you soon bro.

  3. What Sean said, take a few extra days if you can and cruise around the area. Still some "affordable" places in the east bay as well, lots of cool older houses from the 20's on up. You could be close to the bay, the straights (east bay) or the coast, and if you find a place inland in the greater bay area the beach/coast is really close. I bailed out of LA in 1990 after growing up most of my life there and I have NEVER looked back, still things and folks I miss down there but you won't regret the move. Sounds like you already know how low key and *****en the car related scene is up here. Don't rule out Santa Cruz or Half Moon Bay either. If you want an real estate papers from around the area let us know, though I'm down by Monterey.

  7. Cambell is ok cept' for some of the people who live there.....bunch of midget **** watching, Fomoco driving, computer geeks....

Your coming to the BBQ in San Jo right? I'll try to remember to bring some real estate **** for you to peruse, and Sam is right, if you want bay area close to the city Alameda is pretty *****en, worth checking out.... oh and Benecia is cool to but I think its getting pricey now.

Alameda is cool. I seriously dig Campbell though, but I'm biased.

Like ole Ratboy, I am a So-Cal transplant as well. Came up here in 86.

I'll get your resume in at Apple if you want.

I live a little farther north in Benicia...pretty pricy, but you can still find a fixer upper in the mid 300Ks....Or in Vallejo there are plenty of nice old homes from 350 and up (cheaper if you want a fixer) Benicia was recently voted best place to live in the bay area by the SF Chronicle.....very family oriented with a ton of nice community stuff going on. Only 30 minutes from SF or Oakland and right on the water.

I like the North bay, Napa area. A little over an hour from SF, or Sac or the beach. Plenty of lakes for boating etc. Killer hills if you're into mountain biking, great twisty, scenic roads etc.

Campbell rules:) ...and so does Willow Glen!
    pricey though:(

SF -one hour away, the beach ( Santa Cruz) -half and hour, (Sacramento) - 1 1/2 hours, the snow ( Tahoe)- 3 hours, Socal- 5 hours away, Paso- 2 1/2 :)

You'll like Norcal and we are very central to everything!

believe me, i've traveled the world for many years and i love where i live.

do you know the way ...to San Jose?

come visit for awhile and scope it out, just like Sean said:)

    take care,
    CAB

  13. campbell seemed alot cooler as i was growing up. mabey i was just blind. i have a hard time going back now... theres not one orchard left. houses and more houses. still its a nice area in the middle of a preety diverse area of the country.
my advice would be to move as close to jaliscos mexican food as possible.
theres alot of nice older house downtown. parts of sj arnt bad either. for being the 3rd most populated city in ca you deffinatly would think the opposite.
ive always had the dream to buy some old ww2 hanger on alameda and live out there with the best view of sf in the bay. and nice deserted streets to drive around on at night.

i moved up here from socal a couple years ago (east hollywood / los feliz area.) i think the car stuff is better up here and the people in the car scene are nicer folks. also dont miss the LA traffic. i consider san jose home now and am happy about that....

i live right next to campbell. it's a great area. as mentioned, willow glen is nice as well. these are all in the same central area.... about 1 hr south of SF in the south bay.

good luck and let us locals know if you need a hand with anything.

    Piero,
I'd have to agree with this comment 100%, Henry's place ...is da bomb, homemade fresh tortilla made daily and their salsa ...oh man!

Also, nearby is a great Indian food (Royal Taj) , Thai (Thai Orchid) , Chinese ( Greatwall), Sushi (Kazoo) and many burger joints:)
what ever's your eating pleasure... it's available within a 5 min drive through town.

Send a pm and let us know if ya need anyhelp looking for places and a home in your price range?

  16. Campbell's lovely (tho I may be a little biased.....)

Apart from the previously mentioned Midget ****.....

And Steve, you forgot the worlds best late night fast food store.....

Taco Bravo at the end of your street!!

  17. Scott: We lived right up the street from the Dresden, Palermo & the House Of Pies off Franklin, man I loved that area but just got sick of having the rest of LA around us! Los Feliz was great, though our little slice of it became very chic after we left.

Evel: Do you surf, is that why you want to be near the water? As you probably know this area rules for surf spots though its cold! I can't recommend moving up here enough, there is something in the air/water that just makes the people & places "nicer". Plus as Steve C. said you are close to many different things: snow, city, coast, plus you can get out into the country and away from the crowds easily here. Guess your location will partly depend on what you do for a living and what the job market in your field is like in each area. You can't go wrong here!

We were neighbors. We lived on N. NewHampshire, between Franklin & Hollywood Blvd (one block over from Vermont.) Lived there early 90's (when George's diner and Onyx coffeehouse were still around) until about 1995 (when it started to turn into the "new Melrose"-- good times. I used to drive my white convertible '62 Lincoln around there and loved it. However, you are right... i loved it less when i had to leave the neighborhood.

Back to Norcal..... lot's of options if you're working from home. if you have to commute, i'd say you try to keep work close to home, as traffic is lousy here to.

  20. Georges was our FAVORITE place to eat breakfast, I have some funny stories about that place. I was so bummed to see it turned into some Hollywood "hip" place, that neighborhood had such a cool feel to it. I loved the little market & the theater there too. We moved away in 1990. I do miss Yucca Hut too, we were on Clarissa 1 or 2 blocks above Franklin, I had old VW buses back then.....

    Evel,

Welcome to the Nor-cal group. If the south bay (San Jose, Campbell) is your desire, then there are plenty of HAMB'ers to aid you in your search. Areas around here are very touchy. Pricing for homes is extremely area specific. Depending on your price ranges you can find great housing all over but be specific about what you like to do. nightlife vs. neighborhoods, ocean vs. bay, old homes vs. safe neighborhoods.
Ask a lot of questions and I think we'll all be able to help. Lived here my whole life (30 fine years) so I'm open to answering any questions. Again, glad to hear the Mad Fabs are making a move to the Nor-cal group, we welcome all with open arms.
