A fellow hamber is selling his 55 or 56 Pontiac 316 motor and trans, and my stocker is shot. Can I bolt in this Pontiac motor in my 53 Chevy 210?? It looks nice and runs, as opposed to my little straight 6 "blue flame" . Somebody give me some good news. Jason
A 316 is from a 56 Pontiac. There would be plenty of room under the hood. As for a direct bolt in??? I seriously doubt it or it would seem more common. Fab some brackets and the 316 would work real nice. The Pontiac motor has one engine mount for the front and two on the transmission. I believe the Chevy six is similar. I wouldn't think it could be too involved. Bil
Back then the G.M. divisions shared nothing in the way of engineering, only the occasional body shell, and when this was done the upscale division's car would have a longer front end and a totally different frame and suspension. I'm not saying it can't be done, but be prepared for some fabrication, hell, you might even have to move the sump. All that aside; it should be worth the effort.
Thanks guys, thats what I was looking for. I figured it wouldn't be a direct bolt in, but with a little fanagling it will fit. Jason
Don't forget the closed-driveline; you're going to have to convert to open If the Pontiac has a Hydro it will fit the frame with some modifications You may have starter motor problems, I don't remember where the Pontiac stater is If this is your first engine swap, it will be a challenge
Call Tom Langdon and ask him. The motor mounts he sells stradle the frame and can be moved. To drop my 230 in my fiddy fo we had to stagger the mounts but worked really well and the quality was top notch. Ol Tom is pretty dang knowledgable about what will and will not work. Pontiac V8s have a driver's side starter mount, but with the '49-54 Chevy drag link steering, I don't think that it would be a problem. Find an old Hurst '55-'60 Pontiac saddle mount, and with a pair of frame mounts available from Speedway, it shouldn't be too difficult.
