Okalona, MS. Home of Rogers Furniture... been there several times. Nice folks..
Like what you did with the truck. Old fire trucks are pretty easy to find her in AL too.. usually pretty cheap too. Our local dept. just in the last few years sold a '53 Ford that had less than 6k miles.. still smelled new.

We talked about windshields a couple weeks ago, to chop, belt sander or sand blaster?...have you been to Austin yet?..been to Roundup in April?..I'm just starting on a project like this firetruck, mines a 58 White "Super Mustang" tractor truck, I think I'm gonna downsize the big flat grille a bit and use it, chrome stacks, cut down 50s pickup bed.....Rick

    Cool Truck!

I like the name Fire Rod.

Screw the guys that don't like you cutting up the truck. It's way better that you use it than it sitting collecting dust and rust.

Looks good......I like the fact that you didn't mount the rearend too close to the cab.....alot of guys do, and they look out of proportion.....yours looks balanced.........nice job!

I never saw this thread. He pretty much built my truck. Except I plan to run the original flatty. Mine isn't a fire truck, but the end result is pretty close. At least now I can see what it will look like before I even start.

I love seeing a nice old firetruck as much as most anyone, but not enough to restore and store one. My son and I bought a decent 1-1/2 ton 47 Ford truck a few weeks ago. Its now sitting in the driveway in front of our garage. Folks keep stopping by and ask if we are gonna restore it, then voice their dismay that we plan to "make a hot rod" out of it.

I have told each of them that, if they want it restored, I would be happy to sell it to them. No takers.

The world is full of people who want to tell you what you should have done, about almost everything. Listen respectfully, retain anything of value, then do what you think is right.

Nice truck. Glad you saved it. Have fun.

thanks, i was going to use the org-flathead cause i hate to see 350s in a ford or (everything) but it was shot and i had just put my 54 pu on an s10 frame and had all that stuff around (235 ,trans and rearend) this p.o.s. is probably the closest thing to a "rat rod" as you can get and i love it!

ps thanks- to all the people who didnt like it or thought i screwed up a good truck , im not mad, i like that you love hot rods and dont mind stickin up for them....how else are we going to teach the kids today what not to do!

The firetrucks I've seen on egay and elsewhere are going for next to nothing, particularly if they aren't able to be driven under their own steam. A guy on another forum got one in Iowa for like $1200 and spend two grand to get it hauled home. There are far more of them than there is demand. Not that anyone can afford to drive one anymore...

    I applaud "eliterate's" ingenuity!

everbody's got an opinion; if you dig it, then do what you will. you just gave that old cab a new incarnation, and a whole new story. I really dig where you're taking it so far! good work.

as for what you've done with what you found: parts is parts. it's all fair game to me.

  25. Ok, I've had my eye on a '42 Internatioanl firetruck for several years. All this talk's got me thinking of the dropped and chopped approach. Probably get it for a song. What to do, what to do?

I think it looks killer, you can't restore all of them. How many times have all of you on here heard,"you've ruined that model a" or,"you're going to ruin that nice car".Give the guy a break,he's breathed new life into the ol' girl:D

  27. You know, I did know where there was this big-ass 30's American Lafrance or Mack or who knows what big firetruck in a field... it was some kind of crewcab deal with a conventional hood...

Yeah, it kind of sucks to build that from a decent firetruck, we have cabs like that laying around no one gives a damn about that could be the same thing for not much more work... but like you said, not that many people give enough of a crap about them to put their money where their mouth is, and a lot of the ones that do are cheap bastards. I like the photoshop of it shortened, sectioned and chopped, that would be neat to see someone run.

This thing reminds me of my hometown's "Firemen's Muster" competition in the 50s-60s. Lots of departments had cut down and hot-rodded trucks for these popular competitions - so this vehicle is pretty "traditional", at least in New England and NY, and probably in other areas as well. vic
