I use the nylon straps from Perma Cool to hold my electiric fans to my radiator. Now I need a new radiator, but don't want to pay $12.00 in shipping for $10.00 in parts. Anyone know of straps like these that I could buy locally?

they are a zip strip type setup correct? can you just stick a thin pocket knife in and relieve the catch very carefully and re-use the ones you have? otherwise, you can get big zip-ties and use a nylon washer

I already destroyed the first ones getting them off the radiator. Could you please explain or draw a sketch (preferred) of how to use the zip-tie and nylon washer? Thanks a bunch.

It's good to see someone asking how-to questions on here (and you ask a LOT of them) ,but this just seems like something you could figure out on your own, don't you agree? i'm not being mean, just honest...

it doesn't look pretty but I've done it with my race cars. basically you are using the zip tie like a nut and bolt. you take two large zip ties per strap. you cut one tie close to the "catch" area to make the "nut". you take the nylon washer that just fits over the zip tie but won't pull over the catch area and slide it on the "bolt". slide this through your fan and into your radiator. Put another nylon washer over the zip tie that sticks through the radiator and slide the "nut catch" over it to lock it in place. should look less pretty but work about the same

I usually learn something when Scratch Built asks a question. For example, I just learned how to make a nut/bolt out of a zip tie. Thanks! and keep the questions coming

You can buy the install packet that includes the zippit thingies and the foam washers from most Napa, or other auto parts stores. Just look in the area the have the transmission coolers in.

    Good luck

How to questions are always good. You however didn't come anywhere close to answering his question. If you actually knew how to do it you could have explained it quite easily. "not being mean" thats true just an a--hole.

How about finding some long, small diameter bolts about the same dia as the plastic ones. Grind the threads off the area of the bolt that will be within the radiator and using shrink tubing over the bolt to protect the fins and tubes at this area. Actually the best thing would be to make a metal bracket that holds the fan in place.
You keep asking questions. We all need to ask questions.

I don't think they are actually bolts. They are more like a round zip tie or at least the ones I have used in the past.

Yes, i realize that but you could reuse these in a manner of just using a nut on the other side with plastic washers on both sides of the head and nut. Just a suggestion... I havent done this.. May not work but I dont see why not.

are these the same style that come with a trans cooler? i belive Napa carries some. might have to just ask for "trans cooler hold downs" or something like that.

Yeah it could work if you don't overtighten the nut.

    Amen!

I also thought about zip ties but didn't think of using it the way described above. None of us is too old to learn something new.

might i suggest instead of using those hokey plastic things, you fab up some brackets from aluminum to hold the fan. you're radiator will thank you.

I always read his questions too, I wasn't trying to sound like a know-it-all dick...it just strikes me as odd that he asks so many questions, and that's what this place is here for...I'm just sorta surprised more people don't ask that many questions during their build, that's what I was sorta getting at...I didn't mean for it to come out that way...

I do ask too many questions!

Standard Speedshop was only pointing out the obvious. I keep telling myself I'll stop asking questions, then I run into another problem (big or small) and it's just so easy to get on here and get GOOD information. Add this to the fact that I'm never satisfied knowing an answer unless I can completely understand all the reasoning behind it. I keep waiting for the day that my roaster is trouble free and I just lurk here and drive the hell out of my car. However, as I'm finding out as a first time car BUILDER, even when it's drivable it has its problems. Thanks

I'm sorry for how that sounded JP, you have a damned good point about how easy it is to get answers here, and it's just as easy for dicks like me to say mean shit, keep on asking questions...

If you can make other brackets to hold the fan. I have had to fix to many rads that the cheap quick fix retainers make a hole in.

Why not fabricate a shroud that also mounts the fan. It's a win/win situation.

Look what I did. I made a good suggestion and didn't say anything about the appearance of your "car".
