I'm going the Broadway ***le route (papers not back yet). I have a car, with VIN, no ***le, bought legally.

RustyNYer, with all due respect, the red tape increases the closer you get to NYC. Still, I hope you're right.

As just mentioned, no two states are alike. What works in OK will not work in MI. The vehicle inspection needs to be done before the vehicle can be ***led. That car will not p*** a MI vehicle inspection. The Secretary of State in MI handles the ***les and license plates in the same office. You need a VIN before a temp plate/tag will be issued. It doesn't work the other way around.

Look, waiting until the car is done is not the time to address ***le issues. It's when you buy the frame/shell. You need to get with the local police on the requirements of a vehicle inspection and with your local DMV for ***ling and plates/tags. This guy didn't have to go through the greif he's going to go through now. And as I mentioned, he hasn't even thought out the insurance portion of this. While insurance is required, I think he'll find it extremely hard to find an agent willing to write the policy. Adjusters aren't dumb either. If I saw a riveted plate on the frame, or numbers punched on a non-original frame (and I know the difference), the car will get sent to underwriting or SIU (Special Investigations Unit).

EDIT: Just a note. This isn't the adjuster trying to be a *****. It is their job to verify that the car insured is what the owner is driving. Insurance fraud is why insurance rates are as high as they are. Stolen cars are sold with changed/altered VINs and the age of the car doesn't stop this from happening.

In the case of the Pontiac above, the time to worry about ***lling that car is now. Join the Pontiac/Oakland Club and find out where the serial numbers were stamped. Use that number. Get a good, clear photo of the number and take that with you, pay your sales tax now and be done with it. It is not illegal to replace a cowl tag with a new one. It is illegal to misrepresent a car as something it's not. This is called fraud. Ask Boyd Coddington!

I was down at DMV the other day and there is a big sign on the wall that states that submitting any paperwork with false or misleading information about a motor vehicle was a FELONY! Now go on down there and lie about it!!

When was the last time somebody from DMV came out and made sure you had a VIN # on your car? As long as the VIN # is on the ***le, which it should be! then that is the VIN # and that's all they need to know, or want to know. Even if you get pulled over, when was the last time a cop checked your block or frame for a VIN #? Never happened to me nor have I ever heard of it happening. The only time no VIN could be a problem is if the vehicle is stolen, then the police will need the VIN for identification purposes.

Here is the answer to your question-
Now get a br*** tag, engrave it with that number, either make another tag for the frame or stamp that number in the frame as instructed in previous posts...then go and get the ***le transfered into your name. What is so hard about that?

Okay, thanks a ton fellas. I had to sleep, go to school, then go to work today so I couldn't do anything DMV related. Tomorrow I'll try it again, I have a new plan of attack and I'll let you know how it turns out. Again, thanks for all the advice.

In Minnesota you take 4 photos of the car from the front, Side, Ect. and bring in anything you have on the car,If you don't, Wright what #'s you can get from the car doun and bring that in. Tell them it's ben sitting in your yard for over 6 years or so and you need to tab it.
I was trying to file for lost ***le and the lady told me that's to mutch work,,, Do it this way.

I have had it several times.

It depends a lot on the state you are in but I know in California they run Vin numbers all the time at the DMV (I had to show them where it was on my p/u) and more often by the CHP. More than just those agencies will run them as well. Tow yards do it to make sure the car they towed is the actual car they towed. Smog test centers verify vin and I am pretty sure engine block numbers as well. And yes I realize many of those do not apply to us.

A piece of paper is exactly that, a piece of paper. They verify to make sure you are not doing exactly what is being described in this thread. Granted these are newer vehicles than what is being described here, but it does show they check.

I would imagine in most states no vin will almost surely cause serious headaches as well as impounding of the vehicle until it is sorted.

I ran into the same problem with a 66 Plymouth I bought. It came with a ***le, but the vin plate was missing. I bought a little chunk of stainless, cut it, cleaned it, stamped it, and stuck it back on. I had an Ohio out of state inspection performed, and had no problems at all. As mentioned before, have all your ducks in a row and make sure you tell everyone the same thing. Good luck.

I've been waiting to respond to this and Today I got my ***le in the mail for my 26 T coupe.
What I did was to tell the whole truth to the Minnesota DMV local office. They have a form you fill out, you put down everything you know about the car, take four pictures and have a bill of sale. I also told them the serial number on the Stock 26 frame. I explained that in 26 the car came with a frame number and the same number stamped on the block. The engine that came with it was a 24 so I asked them to look up the frame number to see if someone else was using it. No one was and that was all there was to it. I paid the sales tax and all the other fees, and am getting personalized collector plates "MY 26 T", it cost me $253.00.

  14. The easiest way for you might be to call your DOT office and ask them what you need.
I just did a couple here in ND. I will admit that our state is fairly easy going when it comes to ***leing vehicles.
The local Highway patrolman stops by to ck out the cars and does the paperwork that I hand in to the DOT office.
One car has the ser.# and I have a bill-of-sale (BOS is very helpful), go to DOT off., done deal.
One car has ser.#, NO bill of sale or ***le, So this car has been in our family for ever  -and we lost the ***le !??, ((that also means we didn't buy it so there is NO tax to pay !! :D)) go to DOT off., done deal.
Car has no ser.#, bill of sale, ***le, nothing !! Hwy Patrolman fill out app. with all the correct info, yr.-make-model, etc. Go to DOT off. and they issue a VIN # that you apply to car. Done deal.
If a ***le isn't availabel, a bill-of-sale can save you a ton of headaches, get one.
    GOOD LUCK :)

  15. No one can tell you what to do. But if you think about it a minute you can probably figure something out.

I have a 1929 Model A and there is a vin number on the left front frame. It is on the top under the hood hold down body skirt just in front of the firewall. I've worked on so many old cars. Chevy vin number is the engine number.

I have a 1929 Ford Model A it is a Tudor Sedan. The VIN is on the left front under the hood hold body tin. I've worked on a few of these cars and the VIN number is on the top left of the frame in front of the firewall. If you are working on a Chevy the VIN is the engine number for many years. The laws changed so in I think it was in the 40's it was required to be on the frame of all vehicles.
