Any H.A.M.Bers out there that can extend the Capillary tube on my 53 chevy's Coolant temperature guage?
I don't think that can be done. Once you crack those open, all the juice runs out, and god knows how you get it back in there, or even what it's made out of. You might be able to buy an aftermarket gauge and take the guts out.
There is a posting on how to repair, I would guess that you could modify technique to extent: http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=182157&highlight=capillary+tube+repair Some great info there.
It's a pretty simple proposition - just make sure you've got all the fluid in the sensing bulb; keep the bulb in a pan of cool water (so as not to have it boil off as you're soldering on the extension - and you're golden. I have a Stude cap tube temp gauge you can muck around with first to get the hang of it....
so the possibility of doing this is good..and i understand the ways and means..where would i get the tiny little copper tube?..and how do you keep from soddering the little f**er shut?..maybe im not up to this..and need some one to do it 4 me?
Any AC/refrigeration/appliance repair shop will have the small diameter tubing. Not that hard to do, just buy some additional length tube and practice.
An hour away - I'm between Detroit and Pontiac just off Woodward. I'll be around next weekend if you want to give it a whirl...
well its a possibility..there is the downriver cruise saturday i will most likely be going to that..if mother nature and all the stars line up i will probably be there..I will definetly keep you in mind even if that weekend gets shot to the curb..maybe i can exume it from the dash and let you know how much longer it needs to be and go from there? I would say yes for sure but my schedule gets screwy alot from work and kids..life and all that crazy shit
yep sorry i wasnt clear ..thats what i ment too next weekend..next weekend is the DownRiver cuise..and not sure where i will be for sure..but if it can be done or worked into my hectic schedule..I'll pm ya and go from there..muchas gracias for the offer..if not this soon maybe in close future?
This can be done. If they can be repaired, the extension should be no problem. If you want, I can find the guy that does it for Cords, as they use this type of temp gauge. Also, I will also have to do this for the flatty in my Cord and I found a missing Cord gauge that is broken/missing the alcohol/fluid. PM me as I'll forget to look.
For the sake of the archives, here is some info I found from the Cord commuinity: DIY link: http://www.ply33.com/Repair/tempgauge A repair source from Hemmings that I was referred to: John Wolf Co. Willoughby ,Oh 888-309-0453 edit: also see this HAMB thread: http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=182157&highlight=temp+gauge in this thread of note, HAMBer Vaphead knows of a guy that can do it and that www.gaugeguys.com repaired another HAMBers gauge
