I've got four 50's ish Olds motors with hydromatics bolted to them that I'd like to try and ID. I've been on various web sites and I'm also a member of the AACNCclub and have been disappointed with the Olds information out on the web.

These motors were pulled from running cars about 15-20 years ago and they have been in dry storage since. All of the motors are dry, rotate freely, the oil in them is good and water-free and the fluid in the transmissions is red and not burnt. The motors are pretty much dressed out with starters, brackets and pulleys and a couple have generators and PS pumps still attatched. The red motor and gold motor are 4 barrels (Rochester 4-Jets) and the 303 has a side draft Rochester and, of course, the J2 is a three deuce motor.

The J2 motor casting numbers are as follows:

    Block - 568929 - Block date code 184
    Heads- 569137 # on exhaust ports 14/16
    Intake- 571145

The gold motor casting numbers are as follows:

Same block casting number as the J2, so I ***ume this is a 371, like the J2?

    Block - 568929 - Block Date Code 143
    Heads- 571870 # on exhaust ports 16/16
    Intake- 569138

The red motor casting numbers are as follows:

    Block - 574865-4 - Block date code 305
    Heads- 573305 # on exhaust ports 18/18
    Intake- 573323

This motor has five bolts around the perimeter of the head rather than two in the center that hold the valve covers on so it is at least a '59 motor or newer...probably a high compression '59 371 or maybe a later 394??

The green motor is a 303 and its casting numbers are as follows:

    Block - 555641 - Block date code K88 or K89
    Heads- 555644
    Intake- 555693

This 303 motor has a funky looking side-draft Rochester carb on it along with headers, a spin-on oil filter adapter and a Hydro-Motive race Hydromatic bolted to it. Does anybody know anything about that side draft Rochester carb? The large single barrel venturi points to the back of the motor.

In addition to the Hydromatics on the motors I have two other hydromatics. Like the trans on the 303, one of the extra ******s is a Hydro-Motive race trans that has a small block Chevy belhousing adapter on it, the other is all iron and has a slanted pan on the bottom.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. I'm going to be selling these motors off for a friend and I'd at least like to know what they are so when folks ask I'll have answers.

I've got Photobucket links to the pics of these motors below.

    Thanks!

a few things that may or may not help....

    1. delco electric parts have a date code, format Year-Month-Date. year is one digit, month is a letter, date is one or two digit number. so 3A24 would be Jan 24th 1953. If the starter or gen sort of match the dist, then you can be fairly sure that you have a pretty close date for when it was made.

    2. there should be a number stamped on the block below the head along the side, on the driver side of the engine. This number sequence may tell you something...or may not...I tried getting some info from it on a few olds motors once and didn't have much luck.

    3. the hydramatic id tag should have a two digit number and a letter, such as 53 O that are the year and division, ie 1953 olds. that hydromotive tag is *****in...and not very informative about what trans it is.

Thanks for the info. I'll have to check out the electrics and see what I see. I also need to dig up those stamped numbers on the heads to try and see what they are too. Its amazing how little information is out there on these things.

I did, however, find out that the 1 barrel side draft looking carb (according to the 7002570 number on the tag) is a Rochester from a 50 Olds motor, so at least one question was answered.

Maybe other folks here have casting number information.....

That'll be a big help......There's a small flat just below the valvecovers and thats where I've been looking.....and coming up dry. These motors all have exhaust manifolds on them, I imagine that the numbers will be obscured by them......

    Thanks for the big clue!
