I am getting ready to start another project with: fairly stock 1964 283 that orignally had a powerglide behind it weight around 2200 lbs gear ratio may be 3.23 or 3.55 I am only doing the 5 speed because of fuel prices. My 37 with a 4 speed sag. is about 11mpg. And I did a search for 5speed and could not find how much power that they can handle. I have a s-10 and a camaro 5 speed. How much can they handle? Cannot afford the $2000 for a Tremec at this time. Any help will be appreciated
The camaro t5 can handle about 300 lbs ft. Should stand up to the 283 if you don't beat on it like a muncie. I'm having to replace the cluster and 2nd gear in mine because I beat the hell out of it for a couple of years! I guess it didn't like all the scratch in 2nd gear! jerry
a v8 T5 can handle just over 300 ft lbs. and a v6 t5 is around 250 is what ive been told. I put a 350 in a s10 with the stock trans (v6 T5) and its done well for the past 2 years but we dont beat on it any. its a work truck mostly that sounds really good.
Careful folks. The GM V8 T5 was never rated over 240 lb/ft. The S-10 and any Camaro V6 unit are essentially the same and lighter duty than that. Only the Ford high performance units were rated at 300 lb/ft with the aftermarket super duty and OEM Cobra T5 rated at 330. Rick, You'll be fine with the Camaro unit, particularly if it was a 89+ V8. Just don't expect 200 passes on slicks at the river. Use the S10 tail shaft and shifter rods if you need the shifter forward.
Thanks all!!!! Great to here I can save the money for now. Scotty, No, looking to move out of Austin but still work in Austin (somewhere bout 80mile round trip). So, needing a highway driver.
I've never seen proper torque ratings on the GM T-5, but all WC T-5 should handle at least 265lb/ft, but probably more. In the grand scheme of things, all else being equal, the higher first gear of the Camaro T-5 means it should deal with more power than a lower geared T-5. The 2.95:1 1st gear of the Camaro T-5 is one of the lowest out there. Guessing - but I wouldn't be surprised if the Camaro T-5 was rated at or near 300lb/ft. Besides, these torque ratings are overblown for the most part. IMHO, they're only good for comparing T-5 to other T-5. I believe these were 100,000 mile ratings, not any sort of max power ratings...but I've never read anything official on them. It will be fine behind a 283...
