the plan is to send the body of my 40 dodge to the media blaster. I was planning on spraying POR 15 black on the underside of the whole shell, pans, and fenders when i get it back but what about the topside? I know the web site says it okay to use with a tie coat for the color paint above, but can anyone who's done this comment? The alternative would be to use a self etching primer. Folks 'round here are recommending Sikkens because of recent clear coat problems with PPG.
A self etching primer would be great for the painted "topside" or an epoxy primer. Whichever your paint company recommends will work fine. A word of caution though don't spray the por 15. It's designed to be brushed on. I ***ume the spray technique would be a serious health risk.
I had adhesion issues with their tie coat primer. supposed to be able to put it over base POR-15 with no real prep, but it didn't do so well. tie coat sanded funny too. Maybe it was just me, but I won't use it again. I still like the basic product for roughened, as lightly rusted stuff. By the way it sprays fine but like all paints protect yourself. Base POR-15 is supposed to turn chalky with long term sun exposure. I've only had it in hidden areas of a vehicle. Anyone seen POR-15 turn chalky?
I had put Eastwoods Rust encapsulator on the first frame but the rust came back with 18 months of southern exposure. I had heard that you can ghetto blast the POR 15 with a wagner power painter and latex tip for the under areas. I'm building a driver, not a show car, but I want to do this once and have it last.
