Ok, I painted my car, and wanted to redo the front clip. I masked it off with blue painter tape, and pulled it quickly, but I have glue stuck to my new paint. The previously painted area with the glue stuck to it has been painted for about 2 weeks. What should I use to get this glue off. Single stage acrylic enamel Sherwin Williams brand. I tried letting it sit in the sun, but doesn't seen to help.
Try some wax and grease remover. If you used a hardener in the paint according to mfg directions , you should be ok. Properly cured urethane paints can actually be wiped with lacquer thinner with no adverse results. If your leery, try a small spot in an incon****uous area. Make sure you use a good quality masking tape to avoid this problem in the future.
As stated above, wax and grease remover should work. The blue painters tape that you get in home building centers is not really the stuff to use. You should be using automotive masking tape such as 3M.
Hey, You may wanna try mineral sprits (paint thinner) instead of grease and wax remover. Some grease and wax removers contain some very hot solvents that could cause the tape's gum to set into the new painted surface. S****ey Devils C.C.
2nd that one.....we had some residue from some 3m blue fineline that did the same thing....dx330 was removing the chromabase base ....mineral spirits worked great.....brandon
While I'm not familiar with your American brand paints, I do still a have a couple of suggestions. Firstly, whatever you choose to use try it on an area that is not seen, ie; behind the bumper or something like that. And secondly,if the other solvents mark the paint, I have found that old stuck on masking tape left on lacquer, when soaked with CRC penatrateing oil for a period of a few days, will soften the tape and glue enough so that it will come off with out damageing the paint underneath. If it doesnt mark a solvent sensitive paint then it probably wont damage yours.
I'll third the thinner. I usually use enemel reducer to clean up tape spots or small overspray areas. A surface cleaner can sometimes pull up the basecoat if its still fresh. FFR - The 3M Green stuff works great. I think its 133+ or somehting. Spend the extra couple bucks and save time in the end.
