VW Bugs have earned their place in Hot Rod History. ( some were built, and some of those were really cool )
But it seems when you post a pic or talk about one, people start posting pics of Cal Look Beatles, Restored Hippy Vans , and Cars with flower vases on the Dash...

I havent seen Anglia and Austin Owners do that.

And of course the instant Drama.
That probably wears out their welcome more than anything else....

I don't have an argument one way or the other. I just thought I'd share a cool pic pertaining to the subject. I don't have any information on the car other than I found it on chopsandbobbers.com

I know that Hebmuller VW Rod was not done in the 50´s but I bet there always was a lot of potential in these old VW´s...It´s also a piece of american carculture since the first was imported in 1949.

hot rods are the car of your youth. mine was 55-57 chevys. some relate to the older fords. to days hot rods are hondas. the nezt generation will identify with the mass produced, cheap and fast car of their era, like it always has been.

Lets just face it. Volkswagens look stupid.

.........unless its a baja bug. Then it rules.

I remember one dude building a front engined gasser bug. If I remember right, it was accepted here pretty well.

I found this thread fascinating! Down here in Australia, the ASRF, (Street Rod Federation) has a very tight 'definition' of what makes a streetrod. (or hotrod) I don't have the exact wording, but it describes a vehicle built before 1948 with a 'separate chassis' from the body. The Prefect and Anglias, with their rivetted construction, barely scrape through due to their Ford heritage, but any other 'furren' car with unobody construction is out by definition.

As a nation which relied heavily on English manufacturers for our cars, Austin, Hillman, Morris, Humber etc, fortunately many of the earlier models were built on separate chassis and qualify, but things like Morris Minors, and funnily enough, our very 'own' FJ Holden, first built in 1948, doesn't qualify for hotrod status, it's strictly a 'custom' and under ASRF class rules it isn't allowed at events, even though it was the car 90% of us young Aussies cut our modification teeth on.

I once asked the qualifying question about series 1 Land Rovers. First built in 1948 on a replica WW2 Willys Jeep chassis, they qualify as far as I'm concerned, and I reckon one of these, slammed down, matt aluminium body, V8 in place of the old 4 banger, would make a great looking 'different' hotrod, and I'd even been offered a closed cab pickup one for free! I couldn't get a clear answer........

    Cheers, Glen.

I cut my teeth on VW's , back in '65 I bought one for $150, maybe not a traditional hot rod, but at the time, it was a ball to drive, cheap, and all I could afford. As far as "a hot rod" goes, who cares!! Reminds me of the AKC, if it ain't a "purebred" it doesn't belong here .. My main objective is to DRIVE my car HAVE A BALL and I don't GIVE A FUCK what others say

I guess that's why they've produced more early VW Beetles than any other vehicle in the world.

Here's my favorite...it's a 1948 MG TC originally built by SO-CAL Speed Shop (Doane Spencer and Alex Xydias) and later "recreated" by, among others, Dean Moon, Fred Larson, Dick Kraft, etc.

The volkswagen beetle began its life in the thirties and the design didn't change much. It was an awesome car and still is I have 2, one I drive everyday and one lawn ornament that will be a volksrod someday. I think they have strikes against them because of wwII and the fact that they're a dime a dozen.

But they are cheap and easy to work on, ever lift a V8 with your bare hands... didn't think so but I've lifted a flat four Vdub motor by myself... and my back still hurts but I digress, Volkswagens just don't have the feel of a 32 ford because they aren't rare enough you can get em anywhere, on the other hand a volksrod built right looks awesome to me.

and before I forget other foreign cars can be cool too I guess

Shoichiro Honda was one of the Builders of this Race Car.
An American Car Chassis with a Curtis ( airplane?) Engine.

It won some races in 1924.

    Very Traditional...

But why anybody would post pics of a '86 anything on a Board for Trad Hot Rods & Trad Customs, I just do not understand....
