How do I move a car with no axles?

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by Acey_Deucey, Jun 26, 2007.

  1. I was given a 55 chevy two door post for free but it has no axles under it. It is sitting on the ground on the frame. I have a trailer but it doesn't have a winch. My question to you guys is do you have any good ideas as to how i can get it on the trailer?

Jack it up and back the trailer under it.....set the front down on the trailer....jack up again with floorjack on trailer and back under it some more. Takes a few guys.....go slow so the jack doesn't get away from ya.....a cherry picker works too....and having a few rounds, 'logs', works for rollers under the frame as well....
    I've done this many times......

Block the trailer tires.Unhitch truck.Use 2x6's for skids, pull it on with the truck.

  4. Use a second vehicle to pull it on the trailer. You might also beg, borrow or rent a winch. Harbor freight sells an electric for a C note. If you've got a trailer you'll always have need for a winch. I move mine from boat trailer to car trailer as needed.

call a roll back. i move cars all the time that have no wheels or axles. i use 2 - 4x6x42 and 2 - 4x4x36 pieces of hard wood.

  6. If you can scare up a set of those dollies you normally set under tires, they'll work under the frame with a block of wood set in them. Use them once you get it on the trailer so it moves easier. Be aware they'll go any direction they like.

You really do need a winch, even if it's a big old hand winch, I've used one of those to drag dead cars on trailers before. Without that, even with a rollback to tilt up to slide the car on from, you need to pull it on with another vehicle.

The problem with unhitching your tow vehicle is you lose control of the height of the front of the trailer when the weight of the car is on the back, and you could pull the trailer right over your blocks, or have it move in other ways.

If you can position the car with a large tree behind it, you can back under it as you jack it up fairly easily. Having a couple of 60's/70's GM bumper jacks, that will get you 3 feet in the air, help a lot.

Considering the car is free, if it's a decent body, I would think that a '55 Chevy would be worth the service call and some milage with a rollback, though. I'm not sure what they get now, but you're probably looking at $50 or $75 to get them there and so much a mile to move it. If you end up spending $200, that's still cheap for one of those.

Go to Walmart, Harbor Freight, Lowes, Home Depot, etc... and find a "Come-a-long." Harbor Freight has an 8000 pound capacity "Cable Winch Puller" for $29.99. I keep one of these in my truck at all times because you never know when you'll need to winch something, and this is a good and cheap way to do it.
