I need a really wide (68-70 inch backing plate to backing plate) rear axle for my panel truck project.

anyone know where to find one?

I don't think your going to find one that wide. I have a big Lincoln 9" here that is only 65" wheel flange to wheel flange, and those were wide cars. Might find a van or something in the 68-70" wheel mounting flange, but not in the backing plate to backing plate. Gene

Most knowledgeable rodders measure the rear end width this way ... :)
It is more accurate. Measuring from backing plate to backing plate leaves a lot of room for errors because the width of brake drums and offsets vary so much.

A late 70's to late 80's Ford E-150 series van has a rear end that is 69 and 1/4 inches wide ... measured from wheel mounting flange to wheel mounting flange. :D

14 bolt Chevy 3/4-1 ton single wheel axle is 67.5" WMS-WMS.

Note I said single wheel not the dually or the Cab & Ch***is axle.

The problem with the axles I listed and the Ford Van Axle (mentioned above) which is a Dana 60 is that they are full floats and 8 lug. One thing you could do is run the slightly narrower GM with adapters which would space it to your 70"s and get you a usable bolt pattern.

Now Squirrel may know or someone else but the fullsize up-88 GM 1/2 tons trucks and blazers had 10 bolts or 12 bolts for rear axles and they would be 5x4.75 or 5x5 and should be close to the same width if not the same width as the 14bolt rear. However I don't know that one for certain.

I'm really not opposed to running an 8 lug full floater, I put one in my Dodge and it looks pretty cool.
