Finally found a nailhead to replace the cracked 364. It's a hell of a deal and can't p*** it up. how much trouble am i going to have finding a way to mate this '64 425 up to the '57 3spd manual bellhousing.. then what about flywheels? The 425 right now has a turbo 400 on it.
The bell housing is no problem; '57-'66 blocks had the same pattern. The flywheel is '64-'66, although I see a "universal" standard flywheel on the market now. Unless you luck into a factory stick 'wheel for it, you will have to pay for a balancing job, even with the old Schiefer aluminum units.
ironically I know where there is a '66 401 with 4spd but i'd hate to buy that car to rip the drivetrain out. it's a complete '66 GS with dealer installed 2x4. The 425 is such a good deal that extra could be spent to get the right parts. It is fully rebuilt and save us a lot of money in parts and machine work.
As it was told to me... the manual starters are different from auto starters(teeth count?) I heard they were hard to find........
Not sure about the ****** questions, but I do know some other things you might run into if you haven't adressed them. The motor mounts are diff between the two, but can be made to work together. Use the 425 mount on the block and the 364 mount in the car. The exhaust ports are also diff. One is square the other round. Can't remember which is which. The block is also wider, having a taller deck height I believe. Helped do a '56 322 to a 63' 425 in one of my buddies cars and thats about all I can remember.
the round exhaust ports ended in '56, the 364 was quite a bit different than the 322. thanks for the tip on the motor mounts, they switched from 3 to 4 bolt somewhere in there. there's a set of the 4 bolt adapter plates for '66 GSs on the bay right now wonder if they will work. good point about the starter. I hadn't thought about that, but will check it out. ours is practically brand new, I wonder if it is the correct teeth count.
Revhead, I have an address of a guy that will build the starter to your specs for $200.00. It's a high torque also. I've been talking with him. I used a 59 401 block and a 65-66 crank with a turbo 400. He quoted me $200 for starter. pm me if you want address. TP I got you pm.
The only reason I mention it is that Blown32 is a nailhead nut and we had a conversation about just that.(starter(s)) Apparently,.... there were not a ton of 401/425 manual nailheads and the for some reason the starters vary from an auto to a stick.Adapters and flywheels are readly available....but manual starters are not. Again....this what I heard and found it very interesting.....specially cause I want a nailhead and want it to be manual. Hemis are draining me......
The last time I talked to pinstriper (sam) at Rocco and Cheaters, he still had at least one 425 flywheel. NIB from back in the day. Good deals, great prices, awesome dude to deal with..... Rocco & Cheaters Speed Shop 300 1st Avenue N. Birmingham, AL 35204 Phone: (205)328-5140
Just change the gear on the starter to the right tooth count and your done with the starter.(Which is what by the way?) As for the New flywheels...make sure he has them in stock and be aware that they are zero balanced and will need to be balanced to your ***embly....or at least stock 425 weight.
well billy mr slow and low 63 if you actuall did my motor swap you might of been more help here the exhaust has round ports in 56 and square there after good job poser.
