been looking around for a tech article on "floaters" and no I dont mean 22 inch DUB wheels...lol. but the old school way of making the hubcaps "float". I have my theory of how to do it, but wanted to ask before I jumped right in and started butchering up a set of 500 caps.

    thanks in advance

though I've never done it, my theory would be, for the front drill a 1/4" in the spindle and tap it,get a tapered head screw with blue lock***e and jamnuts to mount the hupcap. For the rears, I think it was mid 80's caprice's had that hubcap mounting dodad that the hubcap screwed on to,make an adapter with like a rollerskate bearing,so that the hubcap would be able to freewheel, then just weight the bottom with wheel weights.Maybe thats not the way but it seemed logical to me

This was posted on here years ago - probably around when I first logged on - I wouldn't even know how to search for it...but I nkow it's been done.

Your ***le doesn't tell anyone what you're after though, so you might not get the responses you're looking for...

I saw an old guy years back did this. Exactly like Rodknocker said on the fronts. I don't know about the rear, but I'll go with it!

Seems like you'd have to use some kind of bearing mounted to a center cone with a weight on the bottom of the hubcap to keep it from spinning?

Something similar to the semi tire gauges that they run, they're always upright.

Yup,I have thought about this as well.

What chaddilac and rodknocker say is the train of thought I had.

Those things on the semi-trailer wheels that stay stationary or"float",are odometers, and used on lease or rental trailers.

Called a "Hub-odometer" or "Hubometer",or something like that.

If you know someone in that 'bidness, see if they have one that you can eyeball.

I have not looked at one in about 30 years.

Thats how Hubmeters work, they rotate on the center, which bolts to the lugs, or axle.
GRSMNKY, Merle's stocks Hubmeters, see Ed there, he knows. Tell em John sent ya

What are you planning on doing about the valve which pokes through the cap?

You either use a short stem, or cut the cap small enough to rotate past that.

As for the valve stem you can weld the hole and put it in the back of the rim. A pain to check pressure but it looks smooth.

There was a company I saw a few months back that made "floater" hubcaps for taxis--- they were like plastic moon discs that would have signs (ads) on them, so you could read them as they went by. Maybe you could find them and adapt the hardware?
