Silly, but just gotta ask. Reason I'm asking is that I have a buddy who drives an all steel, unmolested 32 ford p/u that his dad built for his mother in about '88 or so. It recieved the typical treatment for the time period. It's a very clean truck. w/ a chev V6 that runs great, and has plenty of power, but it has aluminum ( read BILLIT) wheels, and therefor it is not allowed to park in many of the "Traditional" shows. If he changed his wheels, he could probably be allowed into some of them. I guess what I'm saying is, This guys DAD built this truck, not some cheesy Boyd type. And at the time it was built, these were o.k. mods. But now the guy is shunned, and badmouthed by guys that were still picking there noses and talking about T-ball when this truck was built. I just don't get it. I'm totally into Trad stuff, don't get me wrong, but why do we have to be mean to guys that are just having fun driving their cars and going to shows, in a very reliable well running and good looking truck. After all its still a 32. Please don't get all nasty. This is just a simple Question. I'm not trying to start any wars. I just think this guy is getting a hard time from some folks, and it's unfair.I mean, it's accepted to have Bags W/ 2 compressors, tanks and all the high tech gadgets that go w/ them. Mustang 2 front ends w/ power racks, triangulated 4 links and crap like that. What happens ten years from now when that's not cool any more? Are you gonna cut out your monster notch and go backwards, just to be COOL? Wondering how the masses feel. Thanks- Cad
none of that stuff is "traditional" in the sence that people think of it so therefore they are being awfully hypocritical....or "snobs" i think what they are after though is the main outside appearance being "traditional" and wheels really throw that off in photographs really none of that "new" stuff should be alowed in if its a "traditional show"....but then they wouldn't have too many cars at their show....i guess they just choose to draw the line at wheels??? its usually cheaper to park in the parking lot anyways and just enjoy the show
There are 'snob'-types in ALL walks of life...whether it's Corvettes, Exotics, airplanes, vintage furnature and yes, even Hotrods...... See...... http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=191644
Tunnel vision and ignorance. There are a large group of "traditional" rodders that have no clue as to what they are talking / bragging about, building or in general doing. So... they do what they think would be cool from what they have seen others do or read in magazines. Thumbing their noses at other peoples cars are and always has been a way to make others feel better about themselves. I doubt it will change anytime soon. If you want proof just bring up a steel vs. fiberglass or driven vs. trailered conversation around a bunch of car guys, then sit back and watch the fun. Now, with all that said... substitute "street" for "traditional" in the above paragraph. Things are pretty much the same all the way around. It just depends what side of the car yer standing on. I try to look at the overall car, not the style or timeline of when it was built or the era that build is referencing. Although I will admit, sometimes that is a bit difficult.
It's no different than shows that don't allow "finished" cars. There are some...GGs (for example), that seem to be interested in allowing both styles of car. That would work for him. I'd also think that if he was really bummed about not being allowing into the traditional shows (presumably because he likes that style), he'd change his car. No Bryan
Like we say on the Pileup website I respect anyone who really builds their own car. Everyone has their own taste and there's a time and a place for all types. "Traditional" shows are not the place for modern equipment. FWIW, a few of the Czars have cars that we wouldn't let into our own show. We like many types of cars, but they don't all fit in at our show. If all your buddy has to do is change his wheels and he REALLY wants to get in to a traditional show... why doesn't he just change the wheels? It's always reverseable.
Take a 32 and toss a set of 22's on it for all I care, because it's your car. I think just about anything that keeps another piece off history out of the crusher is good. Your taste might not be to my liking but it's one more car that will stay in circulation and that's really what matters. Sorry to hear that your friend is treated in this manner. I think some people forgot mommas rule, "Keep your mouth shut if you don't have anything nice to say".
Depends on the type of crowd the guy hangs with... Show up at a tuner gig with a mustang and there will be some hatin' Show up with a tuner at a mustang gig and there will be some laffin' Show up with a pro streeter at a street rod gig and there will be a mullet hunt Show up with anything but a numbers matching ride at a mopar gig and you're considered to be a lesser form of human. If your buddy wants to be accepted by the trad rod crowd - it should at least look the part. Otherwise - it's an older street rod.
I took the kids from my class to a SHOW with the car they are building. It was a good thing I warned them that people will cut it down , and they did. We had a sign that stated the students built it and some a$$ wipes still did their best to cut it down. I like it when some-one in their 20's or 30's tells me how it was during the 60's/70's when I was growing up . But I also think we are all a little snobby in our own ways.
The guy needs to find new friends or new places to hang out cuz that shit just doesn't fly. It's one thing to not be able to enter a show because of the "rules/look" the promotor wants, and thats understandable (wrong wheels, you don't get in period) but it's a whole different story to be shunned and badmouthed by folks. My Dad has the wrong "wheels" for the HAMB and traditional events but I've never heard ANYONE badmouth his '56. In fact, HAMB members have gone out of their way to help him when things have gone wrong on the road. Things must work different in CA. Here in the Midwest we're all car folks no matter what wheels you have on your ride.
I believe everyone is entitled to be a snob about three things. If you exceed this 3-topic snobbery limit, this makes you a complete asshole. I limit my snobbery to hot rods, "Precious Moments" figurines, puppetry, and scrimshaw. ...hey, wait a minute...
The Mustang II stuff... the airbags... that is all stuff that is hidden. (or should be) The ride isnt traditional, but built in a traditional mindset with modern stuff. Out of sight, out of mind. Billet wheels are hard to hide. Like Denise said... if this guy is getting talked down to because of the style... he needs to find somewhere else to go. I can appreciate most any car. Of course I laugh at the extremes... riced out tuner cars... tacky poorly built, stupid low, rat rods... DONKS... you know, dumb stuff.
but then again ....what is traditional.....if you think about it ....in a sense his truck is traditional.....it is/was built in a circa 80's style ....we are in the year 2007....myself I would change the wheels and call it a day......
There are plenty of street rod shows he can go to. If he wants to participate in having his car at a traditional show, then he needs a traditional car. I can't get my car in at a tuner show because it isn't a tuner. That's not snobby, it's just the way things are.
screw them and drive the car..dont go to their shows..dont give them your money..in general DO what You wan to do..after all its your ride..hey trends were set by people that were before their times..or behind their times..all of us are examples of that..we are in the years 2000+ and making cars look like they were in 1950's or less or other years..and probably back than some one said why the Fu@k did you do that to that car...because he was doing his own thing ..thats what it was all about..BE your self..who the F cares what anyone else thinks..its good to get opinions..but remeber opinions are every where your creation is yours and yours only..i say be original..original to your mind.
His dad built that car so if he wants to leave it then cool. But we're ALL snobs. In one way or another. The only difference is how much it takes for us to say something. Some of us draw the line at wheels, others draw the line at snotty dolls, a few at late model tweedy bird vettes(you know, the super custom ones in which the owner added one sticker to the quarter panel and goes to car shows), some at more doors, and some at tuner cars. I usually keep my opinions to myself and never cut down a dudes car. Especially if he's big. Unless it's really, really, stupid. I knew a kid in San Diego who's dad gave him a nice 54 or 55 vicky. It was perfect and stock. The kid put a pep-boys APC vinyl decal across the windshield. Because he hung with the tuner crowd. Sigh. He had it coming. The worst part was the "Powered by ford" sticker that had a kanji symbol above it. Ugh. That was just ignorance. It's not his fault. We just have a responsibility to new rodders to teach them about the cars and their history. Sometimes a little ridicule is neccesary. Now I know I'm only 27, but I grew up in this world. I'm talking about the guys who are truly new to our hobby. We kinda have to act as guides and be cool. Everything has it's place. Taste is earned through knowledge and experience. I'm done rambling.
I think it's fine to have complete focus and passion for a very specific genre - even to the point of being exclusive. In my view you don't have to like every sort of hot rod or custom to be a "real hot rodder"... or whatever. That kind of free love hippy hot rodding is just not for me. I guess wether you come off as a snob or not will depend on your own securities (or insecurities) and how you handle yourself.
Yes, snobs for sure. It just so happens to be the "Messageboard Mentality(TM)". Unfortunately, that has carried over into real life hot rodding. To some extent, not having the "right" wheels has ALWAYS been a poo-poo'er. I can remember bagging on the guys who had wire wheels when everyone had moved on to Center Lines. One guy in particular had a real nice set of Appliance wires on his Camaro... we'd jazz him about it... but then one day, he redid the Camaro, and showed up with Weld Wheels. I happened to have Welds on my '55 at the time... but all the other guys then felt "one upped". But at NO time did we snub the guy to the point where he wasn't a friend... nor did we ever say he couldn't hang with us! That would have been assholish. I think the first show to have this sort of elitism was the LA Raodsters' Father's Day show... Only painted roadsters in the show and all that hoopla. Cool... they have standards... But in recent times, with the whole RAT ROD crowd, uh-hum, I mean the "Traditional Hot Rod Crowd"... Billetproof was probably the first well known show to set standards (ahem) for what they want at their show. Cool idea. It's good to be pasionate about something... I know I am. For one... the whole show was birthed out of being rejected from the Goodguys type shows where shiney cars were the norm... and the poo-pooing was directed at the "Traditional Rat Rodders". (don't get caught up in the name, I'm just trying to be funny.) So... this thing builds... THEY see how much fun it is... and it grows, and grows and GROWS! When something experiences RAPID GROWTH... there are people who jump on the damn bandwagon who didn't grow up around cars and car people. So, some of them "don't get it". I saw "it", i.e. elitism, in the Model A club as a kid. From about the age of 3 I had to listen to how guys had the wrong wheels, or bumpers on an otherwise correct car... I also had to hear about the evils of hot rodding. But my dad was on the fence with the whole hot rodding thing... we had hot rod and street rodder mags all over the house... and he had buddies into hot rods... so, I knew those people weren't BAD people... they were having FUN! So at a very young age... maybe 9 or 10... I was able to put it all into perspective. I learned that there were two camps, at odds, that were really nice people when you got to know them. I also learned that the stocker guys could get mean and nasty at the mere mention of a hot rod. I knew better though. But to be honest, they had a REASON... a ligitimate one, really. Most of them grew up with stock Model A's... and to them, what they did was "correct"... and any deviation was "incorrect" (they took it one step further ) Do you see where I'm going with this? I sit back here and laugh... when I see "Traditional Rat Rodders" post about how lame "this" is, or "that" is... and bad mouth street machines, or cars with the wrong wheels... or color of paint... but you guys are sounding like a bunch of damn RESTORERS! I appreciate it ( perfect period hot rod)... and, actually want to go there some day with one of my own projects (when I get all the "right" parts collected)... but man, don't be so damn narrow minded! Like guys who bag on street machines... Have you no balls man? Ever drive a 10 second "Street Machine"?? Even if was a late model Mustang... your ass would be plastered to seat so fucking hard you'd appreciate it. I know that may not be your cup of tea... but ya don't gotta say the guy is a cluless idiot for building something that HE LIKES. To sum it all up, I think it's just the uninformed, the bandwagonjumpers and the guys who really think they are above others because they are "Traditional Rat Rodders", that "Don't get it"... Sam.
i must be a monster snob and a jerk cuz i turned away 1/3 rd the cars at last years road zombies BBQ and whats even worse a 1/3 rd of that 1/3 brought side dishes
Yes. But, aren't we all allowed to have an opinion? Just because you over hear someone saying something negative about your car, doesn't mean you have to give a fuck. Do with your vehicle as you like, but don't expect everyone to like it. That's what makes the world go 'round.
Imagine how many 50's built hot rods were "updated" in the 70's. I can just picture someone removing a set of magnesium Halibrands to replace them with Keystone or Cragar wheels because that's what was "in" at the time. Now twenty years later the current owners of cars like that are often searching all over the place for Halibrands to put back on it. If he changes wheels to make the car "fit" the image required to participate in the shows he likes....he should at least keep the wheels from 1988 so he can return the car to 88 vintage if desired.
YES! There are a lot of snobs on this board. But it is a board for so called traditional rods, so I guess they have a right to be. But for some reason that seems to exist in every facet of the car hobby. Muscle car guys, corvette guys, custom guys, etc. each seem to think that their way is the only way. But it does irritate me that if you built a car years ago, and it hasn't been "updated" ("downdated") to meet the new standard of old style that's in right now, it's shunned. Your friends car would probably be considered a dreaded street rod, a term that everyone used to describe their car a few years ago, now everyone treats it like a dirty word. Tradition in hot rodding was always to improve and upgrade an old car, now it seems that tradition is to start going backwards, and make the car less powerful (flatheads, 4cyl etc.) and less safe (single masters, no discs, bias tires etc.) All in the name of style. That to me does not seem to be the true spirit of traditional hot rodding, but I know that most here don't see it that way. I do like the old style so called "traditional" rods, I just find it odd that hot rodders are stepping backwards (almost like antiquers) when building new cars and then looking down their noses at those who don't. With all that said, I still plan to build my cars in a old style, but still with upgrades like radials, dual master, etc., and not look down at those who take a different route. I just think that all car guys (and girls) should stick together, or the tree huggers will have us all peddling bikes.
Hell NO! We are not snobs! If someone wants to run a show they have the right to set the rules of entry. The local show I started going to in 1961 had a 1942 cutoff date, and it was for stone stock cars. The Camaro guys would always bitch about not being allowed on the show field along with all the other Post WWII cars. Once you open the gates to every car the shows loose their reason to exist.
Hello Slicks, Intelligent people talk about ideas.... Normal people talk about things...... Little people talk about other people......! mostly peolpe have no respect any more..Thats were blunt trama comes in! BSB
