I am in no way affiliated with AT&T or subsidiary. I just ran across a story on the net about how AT&T has been forced to offer their DSL service in certain areas for $10. a month. http://www.techdirt.com/articles/20070618/104023.shtml Basically, you have to be in certain areas (I am) and you have to be a new customer (I am) and you can get the $10. The secret is to go to their web-site and click on the basic package (14.95 or 19.95) and see if you qualify for the basic pack. If you do it will pop-up the $10. offer. It is a slow DSL connection but way better than dial-up. You also get a modem for free after the rebate. I realize this is not Hot rod related but it should be of interest to those on dial-up or suffering through some other pitiful means of broadband such as myself. I signed up and checked. There is no waiting period or fee to upgrade if it is too slow for you. There is a one year commitment.
Thanks, Rash. I saw the other post but didn't open it. I figured you had some smart assed comment, so I opened this one and actually got informed! I'll pass this on to some folks I know that have been told they are a mile past the zone for our DSL package. It is cheaper than what I'm paying for the same service!
Isn't AT&T the ones that are selling phone cards for like $50, but when you read the fine print they are only worth $25??
I work for AT&T in publishing (the Yellow Pages) and even they didn't tell us about this. I get the basic slowest-DSL for free (I'm in management), but I can attest to the fact that even their basic DSL is plenty fast. I can get a smokin' good deal on the fastest one they offer, but I see no reason to upgrade for my needs with the speed I have now. I can load movies and big photos faster (seemingly) than I can on my work computer in my office! Very trouble free as well.
Is it possible that AT&T would tell me that their service may or may not be available in my area? if I have phone lines is'nt that it? they haven't called me back and I'm bummed..I can't call cable because we have old style giant dish satellite that still gets cable for free and I don't want to screw that up....
They said it wasn't available in Arkansas - hell - we only got electricity a couple of years ago (smirk).
Just because you have a phone line doesn't mean you can get DSL. Go to their main page and plug in your number and see. Have we gotten rain? I don't remember when it didn't rain. It's raining right now. We have gotten so much rain that the grass in my back yard is dying from too much water. Quite the opposite of the usual.
I have At&T at the office and it's constantly down. I've had them out about 6 times and what it boils down to is, if you don't have fiberoptics in your area you can forget it. They told me that the old copper lines just are capable of supporting the high speed stuff and they're right. At&T has really gone down the drain. I use the Time Warner cable and never have a problem. It's more expensive but it works. My .02.
