OMG... just got a 49 ford coupe... Apparently when buying a car, "a little bondo" means every panel was smashed in at one point. "Patch panels in place" means sheet metal screws over the top of rusty metal is OK... "runs and drives"... shoots gas out of the top of the carb. "nice upholstery..." JC whitney seat covers, and Pepboys carpet... "paint looks good..." Sprayed on top of everything,, bumper, hinges window... Said an done,,,,,, I'm still pretty stoked. It is going to be more of a job than I originally thought, but that's the fun isn't it???
Just the fact it's a real, live 49 ford coupe should be enough to keep you going back to the garage to work on it until it's done to your satisfaction. That was the case with me and my 49 ford coupe. They are so ****ing cool...I miss mine. congrats!
i dig it man for sure! if you ever get tired of sanding bondo, or JC whitney seat covers you can run it down here to armona, i'll take it off your hands for you good lookin score man, cant wait to see some progress!
My '50 Chevy is like that. About the only thing you left out is patch panels made up of pieces of galvanized tin, pop-riveted in place and bondo'ed over; and rear wheel arches that don't match as a result of said repairs. It will still turn as many heads going down the road, though -
"New floors" means old road signs patched over gaping holes. "Completely original" means everything not broken is corroded. "Body perf." means body perforated by bullet holes.
Nice ride man. Don't fool with it to much, just drive the wheels off it!! The quarters on my 56 Chevy were like that. They were riveted and screwed over a small lip of the original metal. It was conveniently done where the down sweep molding is. Hid it really nice.
We all been there, but it turns out good and fun too. Go to look at a car with idea of what the add said,it's never that nice and the more you look the more ya fine wrong, but start thinking I can fix this and that etc. Buy it and bring it home,WOW COOL,got something to work with, the fun starts!! Will not just as you dream rite away, but soooooon. Have fun.
Just make sure the previous owner didn't think bondo was a structural material and used it to 'stiffen' the frame.... I just wish I wasn't speaking from personal experience... Nice ride though. Drive it till the bondo falls off.
Shoebox Fords, especially coupes, are very cool. Also, parts are available, both used and repro, which really helps move things forward. Good luck with your project.
So the joy of discovery continues... New door skin screwed in over the old smashed one,,, and here is my favorite!!! Take a look at the drivers side front door jamb. ... Door was obviously smashed in, along with the jamb... some kustom bodywork done to fix it up right. Anyone got a spare door jamb lying around I could weld in here???
