I haven't put my exhaust system together but I got a set of gl***packs for my 53 chevy. Yesterday I was up my uncles doing some work on my motorcycle frame and their bodyman was up there and he said they'll automatically fail you for gl***packs now. I'd never heard of it and neither had my uncle. I've been digging around google and checked the motor vehicle site and haven't found anything on the subject yet.
On older cars with no catalysts to check I don't think they'll look underneath at the state sites if there's no reason to look...so I don't think you'll fail for TYPE of muffler. You'll fail for NOISE if the thing is noisy idling or when they step on the gas for the brake test...
Don't you have friends with shops? I'm glad to pay the local guys that make there living from garages. $65 and I'm good if the emissions p***.
If its noise you are worried about, I have heard of people using steel wool and stuffing it in the tail pipe just to p*** CHP inspection and then promptly taking it out right after. Anyone know if thats true?
Steel wool up the pipes will reduce the noise long enough to p*** - just don't hammer the throttle on the way to inspection. Just be advised that if it backfires - you can shoot a fireball a good twenty feet outta the pipe, 'cuz steel wool DOES burn. From personal experience, chuck.
I have a set of 6 inch gl***packs on my Ford that are burned out. Pretty much just there for show now. I bit the bullet and skipped state inspection because I ***umed it wouldn't p***. You're honestly better off taking it to a private shop where you might be a little safer. Hell, I even p***ed the hydrocarbon test.
Yep, I used to do that every time they nailed me back in 1956/1962, I would just go to a different police station in Milwaukee. Put the steel wool in and then cover the end with a piece of window screen and then put and echo can (exhaust extension) on and take it down for the inspection. If the car is low, they won't try to look underneath. BB
I'd ask a State Inspector about your state's muffler laws. I'd only take the body guy's advise on bodywork (if he's good).
as far as i know, in nj they fail you. i know my brother had a beater truck when we were younger it blew out the muffler so for cheap we threw on a gl***pack and it failed when the time came. wasnt even loud.
This post brought back a lot of memories. We didn't use steel wool though - that stuff is too dense. We broke open the connection between the muffler and the exhaust and stuffed stainless steel or copper scouring pads in the gl***pack back when I was a young pup and "The Man" gave us a ticket. We had 24 hrs to rectify the noise and show up at the Highway Patrol barracks for a second chance. An hour later we had them back out.
I've done the steel wool deal, but with chunks of fibergl*** insulation cut out of the attic. (hey, it's gl*** packing, right?) Self removing.
When I lived in NJ(leaving was the best thing I ever did) we used to use a bronze scrub pad in the tail pipes, drill a small hole and put a wire thru to hold it in place . They last longer than steel wool and will not burn. Remember the state inspection guys are mostly AH's, and love to h***le you. It's great to beat them.
I have had gl***packs on all my cars, always got a sticker. I dont understand people that will try to go through state inspection though...cheap out and you will prolly fail at state. Go to a "guy" for like $75.
it isn't QQ. she's gon be my daily and the cops up here love hastling people. i don't know anyone with a shop as i'm a young guy. i'll try taking it to a guy, i have no problem paying but they were nailing guys up in the area for p***ing stuff that shouldn't. lots of people had they're license revoked. bummer.
Man, unless your car is really nice looking, prepare for a h***le. It's been my experience that they'll look the other way on lots of stuff if the car is shiny and obviously well maintained. But if it's a beatery looking suede finish with a blanket thrown over the shredded seat they're not going to trust you to be on top of any mechanical failures over the next 12 months, and they will find a reason to fail it. Good luck.
Hmm up there I'm a little lost. If you're up for a drive I could lead you more in the right direction.
Well I could suggest getting the car as up to snuff as possible, stuff the gl***packs, maybe have the independent inspection guy give you a copy of the sheet of everything he has to check for a NJ inspection -so u can go over everything before he does, familiarize yourself with the particulars of the emmision exemptions for older cars, and search out a "qualified" inspection station with good standing and have them do it - remember: all ya need is that colored sticker!
