A short newsreel of Jalopy racing. http://www.thesmokinggun.com/tsgtv/index.html?id=TSGV21-10&link=TSGTVshlk
That's pretty cool. At the end, as the winning driver is getting out of his car, there's a sign on the tower in the background for "Hine Pontiac" and the slogan "I got mine at Hine". There's a "Hine Pontiac" in San Diego that has used that same slogan for years. I wonder if there's a connection?
In 1961 Devils Bowl Speedway was still in East Dallas not too far from residential areas. It was a mile or 2 from our house and we could sit in the back yard and hear the cars on Friday and Saturday nights. We used to ride our bikes over behind the track and watch them run through the fence. This brings back some good memories.
Great jalopy race, best footage of raw speedway, flagman was a freakin daredevil also!! Check out the basketball footage as well, not ice both teams are all white players and the women fan cheering and smokin a heater right at the game!! Truly the old days!!-Sololobo/Roadburners of Omaha
WHOA! I've been talking with an old Devil's bowl racer lately getting history and a bunch of pictures from him. He's always talking about his buddy AD Trowll, the "winner" at the end of that video. Too crazy! I think I may have a picture of AD's car... I'll look tomorrow.
Wow! I was just talking with my neighbor asking him what it was like before they moved it out to rural Mesquite. He told me it was kind of down in a pit with rocky bluffs. He wasn't kidding. I have a 1965 SAGA magazine with an article interviewing Carroll Shelby and he mentions he used to race there.
Yeah. He owned Shady's Transmission Shop in Fort Worth (I think) and raced under that sponser. I used to see him out at Thunderbird Speedway in Crandall after DB moved out east of Dallas.
Shady McWorther was the Devil's Bowl sprint champion several times. He drove the Steakley Chevrolet Sprinter. He is a member of the Sprint Car Hall of Fame. He was fun to watch, he was every bit a good as Johnny Rutheford but he did not like to travel.
