Get them on tape...speed violators, exhibition of speed, etc...over and over again- for like 10 minutes worth of footage. Tape their licence plates. Tape the speed limit signs. Then, call up the local news station. Amature video is hot now a days. They love juicy footage of wrongdoing, and this should get attention on a slow news day. That will in turn get the city's attention, when they run their "look what we found in one local neighborhood...news at 11" special segment they air as a teaser. Maybe you can get some action that way. Nobody lights a fire under the city's *** like the local news does.

The idea of getting them on video sounds good, see if you can come up with a radar gun and do it "do***entary-style", then send it to local news. Do***ent every call you make to the cops or any other authority. Send emails and save them. And get on the docket of a couple of city council meetings (bring a couple of neighbors to speak) and lay it out for the council. Tell them your issues, present your do***entation, and make constructive suggestions like a traffic light at the other outlet of the neighbor hood. None of this will end you up in jail. And don't give up. Keep at it.

Throw a dummy out in front of one of them and see how they react!

Does your police dept have a reserve program? If so, become a reserve and write cites on your street. The local police in my area have a reserve program. You only have to work 1 day a month to remain active.

Call the local TV station and have them do a storie on it. They can rent a few radar guns and show speeders on TV. That should get some people at city hall moving.

  7. Just how do you make a pot hole? Its up to you ACID works though. Put it where they come into the road from their street. If the city is always fixing it then that in itself slows them down.

If the TV is to be believed, Texans will hang someone for using salsa from NYC. Get some Texans involved. Noo York City???! Get a rope!

dump a box of nails and thumb tacks all over the road and set up a lawn chair overlooking the road, it will be a fun day, but make sure you let neighbors know before you do it

I have the same problem. I got to chatting with the sheriff ***igned to traffic duty, he came out and set up a radar trap. He wrote a bunch of tickets, so he saw what was going on. I always make a point to thank him for coming out, offer him a cold drink, let him know we appreciate his effort. Well the more he came out the more tickets he wrote, so now we are on his regular schedule and its starting to make a difference. I've been noticing people are driving slower.
As an added bonus it's fun to grab a chair and watch him work, he just walks out in front of the speeder and points to the curb, love it.
Write an editorial in the local paper, that might light up somebody's ***.
    Good Luck

Maybe pour your own concrete speed-bumps... The city might tear them down, but if you keep putting them up, they might get the message?

I've heard tell of guys taking twenty foot of chain, with each end welded to the ends of a STURDY eight to ten foot pipe, respectively. Apparently, if you throw it out in front of a speeding car, the drive wheels can pick up the chain chain and wrap it around the axle. When you run out of chain, the pipe bottoms out and does some fairly substantial damage. This is all hear-say, so I don't know how effective this really is. It seems possible. If not, they'll at least wonder wtf they just hit, and you can yell at 'em when they stop to ***** you out for throwing **** in front of their car.

We have the same problem. I live at the end of a 1/2 mile straight section of road in a cultisac. We used to have 10+ cars every night at rushhour doing about 45 mph trying to avoid traffic come into our cultisac. Most of that was because I have a dumb**** neighbor who took down the dead end sign because he didn't want to mow around it! These were just the ones that came into the cultisac. There were others that knew it was there and turned at the intersection. They now put 3 stop signs in less that a 1/2 mile, so it has slowed them down a lot. Luckly, one is at the intesection by my house which is at the beginning of the cultisac. Now, if they stop for the stop sign, they see it's a cultisac and turn.
My driveway has a pretty good hill, so I have always been afraid of one of my kids going down it and getting hit.
Good for you 28Oakland for being so vigilant. The one neighbor we had that was like you just moved because they got so fed up with the traffic. Unfortunately for us, it's only going to get worse, as they are doing MAJOR construction on the main road near us, which means more people will be using our 30mph residential street as their "Alternate Route".
I would suggest getting a couple of highway dept. signs that say "road closed to through traffic" and stick them at either end of your street.
Also, just keep on the city people, and the police(they gotta love "easy" tickets:)) and they will eventually figure something out that helps. I think the "TV investigation" idea is also a good one. I've seen it done a few times on our local news.
Good Luck with your battle, I hope you win the war!

Get enough of it on video, record license numbers, take pictures, etc. Get plenty of do***entation.

Call "Channel 2 Works for You" or one of the other troubleshooting hotlines for Channels 23, 6, and 8 here in Tulsa and try to get them involved.

Anything you do to "sabotage" or do things like most have said above - throwing stuff into their cars, etc - that may possibly cause them to crash would make you financially responsible for their damages.

However, if you and your neighbors can get together on this, you could park your vehicles on the street and create an 'obstacle course' type barricade for them to drive through.

Another idea was mentioned above. Take a junked car and paint it black and white, and hang an old hair dryer with a diffuser on the end of it for the speeders. The key to it working is actually moving the car around, and stuffing a dummy in the front seat.

Any local TV stations do "investigative" reporting? find outwhen the next "sweeps" week is and call them shortly before it starts and talk about how bad the street speeding is, etc.

Also call them if anyone get hit by a speeder anywhere in the area -- they can show how widespread the problem is and how the police aren't doing anything, etc etc.

In the meantime I'd go with lots of fist-sized rocks "spilled" on the street.

Give each neighbor a bucket full so entire street will be covered ;)

"all my neighbors hate it as well."

Get a crew together some night and put up a couple of stop signs at intervals. Imbed some extra heavy steel posts in lots of concrete. Mount signs with ****on head bolts with the socket welded up, weld the nuts to the bolts and to the post.

Get an old cop car at an auction and park it in front of your house.

But what I would do is move to the country.

Keep after the city. Take matters into your own hands with some video footage and a rented radar gun. Take your video to the local news and be sure to mention how you have hounded the police about the issue (name names) and have gotten no response....

Don't do anything permanant to the street...just park your cars like this...

Park every car you can find along the street too, and leave them at the maximum distance from the curb. Have the neighbors do the same. We live on a windy 25 mph street, and we even have people drive down it just so they can take the curves fast! We all just quit using the cul-de-sac for parking and we all park on the street now. One guy even parks his semi there at night with barely enough room to drive past it.

UPDATE: Thanks again for all the ideas. I got a Pe***ion signed by everyone on the street (except the grumpy ***hole that lives next to me, another problem). Anyway the city has finally decided to add 2 more speed bumps any day now. I had to argue with the city manager and his henchmen a few times but they ordered them a few weeks ago and should be installed anytime now:rolleyes:. The squeaky wheel gets the grease!

Raise a small amount of cash from those who signed the pe***ion and bribe the paving guys to put a tad too much material on the bumps...an inch or so can make a lot of difference, especially to a Honda...put the highest one in front of the grump's house, so he gets to listen to BANG! Screech! all night...

  22. we had a speeder flying through the alley every night behind our house, one night a railroad tie made it into a leave pile in the alley and made for one hellatious speed bump! that young man hasnt been back to see us in awhile! oh man did we laugh when we heard him wail that tie!!!!

I agree that you need to do something but you need to make sure not to leave yourself open to a law suit from some ****head that had his *** kicked or car damaged from your actions.
What I did was get a city councilman on my side, have HIM ask the police for ***istance in slowing them down and it seemed to work for awhile. How long it will last is anybody's guess. The councilman has seen first hand how they haul *** down my street.

get a ****ty bike from a yardsale and ghost ride it a lil ways in front of the speeding car... it works like a charm.

a good sized brick in a grocery bag does wonders too

    1. News station
    2. Lumber (2x4's and 4x4's) accidentally dropped from the back of a truck in the night across the road in different areas.
    3. Big honkin' rocks or bricks in a bag in different areas. (at night once again!)
Tell neighbors that they might as well leave the stuff (whoever dropped it!??!?) there as it may slow the speeders!

I had the same issue in my neighborhood. I just layed 2 10 foot 2x4's across the street. staggered about 4 feet... everyone slowed down... won't do any damage to cars to get sued either... Jason.

Good for You! I'm going to call the School District PD and the City PD and see if I can get some action to slow down the Mommies as they blast their way down our street to get their little darlin's to school on time each morning. As if speeding isn't enough, when they leave the leave the school they go down the block behind us and turn to cross our street again busting the stop sign at our street on their way home or to work or the beauty parlor or the grocery store.
