Im stuck between biasply or radial WW tires. I've heard all the opinions for both and the ride quality and balancing and all that. And we all have seen the majority of hotrods with biasplys, and they look damn good! But lets see how many out there are running radials, and how good they look! Show 'em!!

What do you mean why? Did you read the thread or just post to the title?

Anyone want to share a pic of your rod thats running radials?

Why would you put radials on a traditional rod?

good to see the Trad Police are out in force.

36 couper, your coupe looks good on those tires.

if you're looking to do a strictly 40s or 50s fenderless hot rod, than yeah bias are the way to go, but radials can work well on a 60's style rod with some vintage mag wheels, lotsa flake and chrome, for example.

    My take...

I realize there are problems with bias tires... BUT, these aren't problems that can't be overcome and the effort is well worth the result. Be patient, take your time, and work it out... straight wheels, a good balance shop, etc...

When I was at Coker, I watched the crew mount and balance a number of sets of bias tires for customers that had bought wheel and tire combinations. I'd guess I watched 5 sets go through and not one of them took more weight than your average radial. True wheels obviously help a lot...

I've had no less than 6 sets of bias Firestones on my cars and I have NEVER had a single issue once they were road force balanced (thanks dw!)...

All that said, radials don't bother me all that much on a fendered car. On a fenderless car, they can hurt the look quite a bit...

And sorry for taking over your post monster... innapropriate on my part... lets show him some photos fellas...

ryan, yod didn't take this post over, you helped steer it back on track with reasoned arguments instead of snarky one liners.

Most all the pics I have are rods with Bias plys, as they do look better.
But here are afew with radials that look good......but imagine these with bias. The fronts especially look out of place.....but if the car is driven alot, I tend to overlook the radials....a little
Also, the Hurst slicks are recapped onto radials. I just purchased a set from Cody and they look GREAT!

Anyone have any thoughts on extra wear on ball bearing wheel bearings with radials? Wouldn't the extra stress of the stiffer tire cause premature wear? Seems a kingpin/ball bearing wheel bearing front end would be better suited for bias ply IMO.

  14. I'll probably roll around on these until i decide what I really want. I think some early radials look pretty decent, the style seemed to have evolved over time. The problem is old tires are still old tires.

This is a coast to coast flatty drivetrain and radials that I would drive anywhere. It handles and rides like a new car and the seats are like a livingroom couch.
My 34 pickup with bias tires on the other hand look much better but I would never want to drive it over 300 miles.
I agree... I would be hard pressed to but radials on a open wheeled car regardless.

    this RPU had Radials.
only because they were attached when I got the car.

I saw a guy at York with a set of whitewall radials, I believe they are a new release by coker, I'm not sure what they call them but it was the closest thing to a bias ply look but in a radial, I did talk to the guy and he said he didn't notice that big of a difference, I always say if you never try radials you won't know if there's a difference anyway, I put 1000's of miles a year on my roadster with firestone bias whites and think it is an absolute pleasure to drive at any speed, as far as tires being out of round some bias plys will get lumpy after long winter sittings but the more you drive them the better they get.

sr. monster: i stole these pictures off the hamb. what makes the these look better than most is that they have narrow treads and huge sidewalls, kinda like the bi-plies they're trying to emulate.

    ed

ps- this guy didn't ask for anyone's opinion -- just pictures. if you really don't like radials, then don't reply to this thread and giggle with self-righteous glee as it sinks to the bottom.

Okay, I'll bite. Even though I know this is a trick to call us old men and little girls by the bias nazi's.

It's a proven fact that radials are more comfortable for gentle tushes.

And just to show that I'm not "biased" one way or the other. How about 2 of each. Radials on the front and bias cheaters on the back. OMG, hot rods are dangerous!

Few will argue that bias doesn't look better. I've said it before. I can't afford $6-800 for a new set every little bit.

I'm not going to blame a guy who drives alot for putting radials on.

nothing whatsoever wrong with putting radials on a 60's style car...

just have to be very particular on sizing/tread. a lot of the radials look like a balloon....

Thanks a lot to all that replied!
And, yes, I am building a 60's rod and didnt even know it. I just started writing down all the stuff I wanted in my rod, and realized it was 60's all the way.
Thanks for (most) everyone keeping this thread real and not going off on opinions.
Im sure theres more pics of cars out there, especially open wheel rods, with radials?!
So far, what I've seen, with the whitewalls and the lined tread with minimum sidewall tread is looking good!
Are there any pics of someone running the new coker radial tire /bias look-a-likes?
    Thanks!
