I was up visiting my wife's family and her uncle said "Hey lets go to this car museum". Little did I know it was Darryl Starbird's http://www.darrylstarbird.com/ We walked around looking at the beautiful vehicles and watching a video about the master himself. As we were leaving (I was buying a poster of his show cars) my father-in-law tells me "Hey Mike, Darryl's in his office". I walked in and Darryl - busy with paperwork - stood up and shook my hand. We talked cars for a few minutes, before we had to leave. He is the nicest guy in around! Anytime you guys are up this way (Northeast Oklahoma) you need to check out the museum. I will upload photos when I get back home. -Mike
Me and Plowboy went to the Museum a couple years ago and got to meet the man. We were joking about how cool his scrap pile would be and he said go ahead and take a look, just close the gate behind you so the horses don't get out. He has a Batmobile.
Been there he might have been on his meds that day you went because he has never been nice to me and I have had family that has helped that guy do more than half his shows that he has ever had.
We actually owned one of his cars not long ago. We spoke with him on the phone a couple of times about the car and he was a very nice guy.
I have a picture of Darryl Starbird's work bench and his metal pile on my refrigerator. How many of you can say THAT...? JOE
I've met him before as well and he was an ass then too. It was during one of his shows in OKC, maybe he just knew we were Okies?!?
He was always kinda a dick at the city show during setup, but cool away from the show. I chalk it up to stress and don't hold it against him.
I've never been to his museum, it's on my "someday" list I only met him once, and he was cool to me then. I was 17, and working in Dave Stuckey's shop, Darryl came over to use the louver press on a Merc hood. Looking back now, I wonder if it may have been that ugly ass "Crystal Ball" merc.
I met him in about 61', rode my bike downtown to where the starbird car show was to be held and met him unloading cars, got paid 3 dollars to help wash all the cars and sweep etc and a free ticket to the sat show. man I was hooked in later years have been in 21 of his shows, sometimes hes friendly sometimes he is just plain busy, good business man good family man, good car guy .......and his son is becoming his dad in his own right and will i suppose take over someday
I met Darryl a few years back at a show in Wichita. He was doing a taping with a car that he had built for the show. I think it was for the McGuiars (however you spell it) show on Speed. He was very personable when I met him and answered several of my questions about the car even though he was busy as hell that day.
I almost flipped when I saw that sitting out by his barn. Wouldn't that be kool to see it as a 60's bubble top concept Kustom??? Starbird is a great guy and a true Kustom god. Remeber when we cruized down to visit the museum and he was working on one of his cars and covered in bondo dust?? He works on projects everday........ Happy Trails, Mick
