Did some junk yard junkin today and found a set of four - hub cap type rings. Guy said they are called fake whitewalls. Anwyays...does anyone have any idea what these would have came on or years they would have been popular? Easily restorable, just not sure if worth buying/selling.
If indeed they are porta-walls they generally don't sell for alot. Especially in junk yard condition.
Not worth buying or selling. I bought a set cheap and they were worth less than I paid. One is coming apart after only a mile of driving. They look OK sitting still!
good e bay items!! I got $57 for a set i paid $4 for!! But thye where never used & in perfect shape. jimV
Ok, sounds good. They just need to be bead blasted and painted. Been stored inside for who knows how long.
sounds like what you are talking about are not port a walls. are they like a hup cap that has a metal ring that hangs over the tire?
sounds like the mopar rings that were made just after the war when tires especially whitewalls were in short supply. they always looked spiffy to me. show us a pic if you can.
yeah porta a whites are white rubber that you slipped behind the bead of the rims ...so i dont think he is talking about those. you couldnt bead blast those. i know where truck loads of those are.. still in original bags but there not worth anything
Do they look like the ones on the '42/'48 Chrysler? This is a scan I did from my Car Spotter's Guide book. I'm not sure if you can read the small print that says "New Beauty Rings" with an arrow pointing to the ring. They are metal with the outside painted white to give the illusion of white walls.
The MOPAR accessory white beauty rings did not extend beyond the lip of the wheel. They were a wheel cover in white painted steel that were installed on the rim and held in place by the hub cap.
When I was a kid, we had a set on our family 46 Pontiac coupe. They were a white painted disc that went under the center hubcap and stretched out to the outside edges of the wheel...like a big fat white painted beauty ring. I thought they were double oogly.
I remember them from back in the day. They weren't popular very long. Might be good to hang on the garage wall especially with an old wheel, tire and cool hubcap.
