I got my engine for my Plymouth build the other day. its a chevy 250 six from a 84 chevy truck. it has the integral intake manifold on the head. i know i can switch out to a older head but this one run perfect and has low miles so i dont plan on doing that. But it seems as far as shiney bits they dont make much for these late model engines. So what are some of my options to dress this turd up a little. have any of your guys messed with these newer style sixes? I want tips for better fuel econemy dont really care about more power. Thanks Bryan
put a hood on the car if it doesn't have one already. And a chain and lock on it. You can probably play with the cam a bit and maybe get a chrome side cover, and send the valve cover off to get chromed if you really want to go crazy. Maybe even make your own header. ***uming they don't make one for the trucks?
...just curious, what Plymouth you puttin this in?.......I have a 32 DeSoto coupe that I plan on runnin a 250 Chev inline in.
Chevy 292.. http://www.stoveboltengineco.com/whatsnew.htm Langdons makes finned side covers for em, you can get offy intakes and valve covers, and a small cam really wakes these puppys up.
i all most forgot about langdons. he lives about 10 min up the road from me too. but i dont think any of his parts fit my goofy integral head motor.
I had one of those 250's in a 4 x 4 pickup. The intregal head gave me fits though with the exhaust manifold. I'd repair it but it stayed cracked all the time. And with a burnt valve that thing ran and sounded like ****. But didn't smoke or use oil. It was a good motor if it wasn't for that stupid head design. I pulled it and dropped a sbc in it. If you can put the older style head on it and make it work go for it.
I actually once had a pair of headers for integral head 250 powered trucks that were part of a package deal of stuff I bought out of an old speed shop. I'm sure they're no longer produced, but they do exist.
His motor already has a truck style dual outlet exhaust manifold, which is cool...but it came with (of all things!) a Rochester Vara-Jet two barrel on it, and the valve cover is kinda odd looking...not like the older (1978 and earlier) integral head 250 p***enger car engines I've messed with in the past! I think side covers interchange...but getting a "cool" valve cover for this motor might be a trick. Ha Ha...it may just need a few coats of paint and that's it?!
i came up with a cool idea for the valve cover. i have my old 235 cover off of one of the space herpies old six's and i was going to cut out the raised Chevrolet lettering and weld it to the 250 cover?
Honestly if i were you, id junk the integral head if you want to dress it up. If your just gonna keep it covered up, put a 2jet on it, and paint it nice and call it good. If you want driveability keep it the way it is, put a better carb on it and just clean it up. if the exhaust isnt cracked it already has the split exhaust on it i bet. just drive it.
yea i came to the conclusion that it doesnt really need to be dressed up its going in a custom any way. i bought a holley economaster 1bbl for it. i need to make an adapter but word on the street is these puppys pull in some good mpg.
Hell with the 600 4bbl in my T on the way to the 50s last year i made 26 mpg... but then again its in a 1500lb car.. it should do ok...
NEVER ever overheat a integral head 250 or you'lll be replacing the head. These are a much thinner casting than a standard 194-292's and crack easily. Were it me, I'd find a 230 head from the git-go, gain a bit of compression and the standard dressup stuff will bolt right on. Jan
Does the integral head dual exhaust manifold fit the earlier 194-292 head? Is so, is it any better than an old regular single exhaust?
I'd get a non-integral 250 head, either headers or dual Fenton cast exhaust manifolds. Patrick's has those. Mild cam, dual carbs you should be good!
my father has the same.. integral head on the motor in his 40 chevy delivery.. running that stock varijet carb, and a muncie (close ratio) 4 speed with a 270 ratio (i think) rear axle he was able to get approx 30mpg.. AND.. he ran 14 inch wheels.. his motor was an 82? vintage.. and we struggled with the same issues.. (he even has an older head and intake) but it ran great.. and it kept running.. (the car was put together in 89.. and since then he's obtained a mercrusier marine 250 inboard motor.. I dont know if the mercruiser valve cover would work on your motor.. but I think it would work on his.. they are aluminum.. and his is finned.. (sorry I dont have a pic of the one dad has..) but there is one on ebay.. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Mercruiser-165Hp-Valve-Cover_W0QQitemZ320121012438QQcmdZViewItem looks like you need to do some research.. I like the idea of welding the old script to the new valve cover.. but.. fwiw.. most customs keep the hood closed..
I have a Mercruiser 165 I/O (chevy 250) in my '73 Rinkerbuilt, if you need some measurements, I'm going to work on it a little tomorrow
i have the same head on my engine. First thing i did was make and adapter to mount a 2G on it and smahed the vara jet to pieces. after that i just shaved the valve cover and pluged those air ports going into the exhaust manifold and replaced the intake/exhaust gasket. Should have it on the road in a few weeks so i can get some mileage figures.
also where the valve cover goes to the head is the same from my experience just different hole locations on the head so if you can do the drilling and tapping you cn make it look like whatever you want or buy and adapter to put yor 235 valvecaover on it and gain clearance for roller rockers
summit racing sells a couple valve covers for the 6: http://tinyurl.com/39jwx6 http://tinyurl.com/33a2g3 even jc whitney has a chrome valve cover if u want it cheap: http://tinyurl.com/3bzndy im looking at getting a 250 from a guy for 50 bucks, so i've been doing a lil research on em.
