Any decent Motor Hotels left?

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by ThunderRocket, Jul 8, 2007.

  1. I was up on Route 66 yesterday and was wondering if any of the 50's Motels are clean and could be recommended.
I'd rather park my car in front of one of these, but wouldn't want to get robbed or catch something creepy.

    Not just Route 66, anywhere.

Saw some really nice ones a couple years ago- I think they were in New Mexico.

  3. I've stayed in Tu***cari a couple of times at a cool old motor hotel, clean and really nice folks own it, I'll try to find the name and post it. Unfortunatly a lot of them are pretty run down now, and I really hate to say this, and I hate the way it makes me sound, but look for the ones that state they are run by Americans as a lot of the older places are REALLY run down and just not clean. Check out all the Route 66 travel sites, I think you will find lots of good advice/reviews on them...

Isn't that an Oxy*****? I always thought Motels or Motor Hotels were supposed to be sleazy! I did p*** through Tu***cari too, the were the quentisential route 66 motels. Didn't stay there though, we stayed in Vaughn New Mexico at the "Bel-Aire" Motel. I did not disappoint, it was like stepping back in time to the 60's. All the decore looked original, down to the skin mount 9 foot stuffed Marlin in the office.

I stayed in a couple of them in New Mexico about 5 years ago. They just don't have the insulation that modern motels do. It's like being in a barracks with all the farting and toilet flushing all night.

Yeah, the Wigwam in San Bernardino goes by the hour, mirrored ceiling, ****, etc. At least it was about 12 years ago....

Sangre De Christo Motel in the Mountains of the same name, on the road between Colorado Springs and Taos.
Their Cafe gives good breakfast too.
    Not a "Googie Motel" though...
