light car, skinny tires and a 9 inch i doubt your gonna break anything, hell i had a 9 inch ford under a 79 bronco with welded gears and i was runnin 38'5x16x15 super swampers and i never broke any axles or anything

Been there, done that. Personally, I wouldn't do it again on a daily driver. Not that the effects are so bad, but that the advantages are so few. On a light car, skinny tires....the worst effect will be the tire chirp as you go around corners and the accelerated tire wear. The car will push as you go around corners, so make sure you get used to that, especially on rain slick or gravel roads. It can make the car hard to park on tight turns.

  7. Been there, done that...don't do it. You will evntually break an axle, and any moisture on the pavement with skinny bias plys will have the car sliding where IT wants to go.

Not on a daily. But I wouldn't hesitate on every once and a while driver.

I ran a spool on the street until I was making a right-hand turn, broke the inside axle and it spun the rear of the car around and I drove up over the curb. I ruined two rims, puntured a sidewall, bent a tie rod and broke an axle.

  10. I run a full spool, sure.. you have to drive it a little different, but I have run it for years with no problems. But then again, I don't drive it everyday.

 well, i have run them and welded the spiders up, too - many years ago...most recently, i ran a model A chopped truck with a posi rear out of a 55 chevy - 4.56 gears....although not a spool, it pushed like hell when trying to turn - felt like the front was in butter - trying to push the truck was a joke as the rear tires worked against you when trying to turn the vehicle - skinney tires might allow you to turn easier, but the rear WILL chirp, Will put extra pressure on the third member, and WILL get to you after a short while - especially if you like leisurely drives - if you like to sprint from light to light every friday nite or take an occasional trip to the 1/8th mile - RUN THE SPOOL!...good luck - personally, I would NOT run one again!

  12. I say do it , it is your car,,, if you don`t like the feel of it the mini spool is not that hard to take out, If you are just driving the car as a fun car and not a daily driver you will probably dig it,,,,Your car do it your way !!!!

Well think about daily driving, When you turn left you usually are goin in a broader arc, closer to a straight line than a curb huggin right turn. Most one legger cars can light 'em hard on a right turn and not so good left. Except for my coupe which can't do it at all. Weight transfer to the ouside is harsher also on a right turn causing more strain. Thus "lightening" the load on the inside. Especially if the car is wanting to go straight due to a locked rear, then you will have much more strain when trying to turn, worse as the turn in sharper.
Based on us who drive on the right side of the road.
Unless you are in Aussie land.......like X38.:D

O.K. You're talking about how you drive; I thought maybe you were referring to some mechanical aspect of the car. Thanks, Jaws.

One other little bit of trivia here. With enough horsepower, you can light both tires with an open rear end, at least on dragsters with no rear suspension. I've run several dragsters with open third members (no spool/no posi-- just functional spider gears) and they pulled both sides. Even the top fuel dragsters in the late 60s and early 70s got on a kick for open rears for a while. There were never any spider gears that would hold up to it for long, though.

Yesterday I yanked 3rd member out and marked everything and dissasembled it , put many spool in , and put it back together . Then carried it across town to my cousin , he checked the back lash , said it was good . He put white lithium grease on the ring and turned the yoke to see the match pattern , said it looked good also . I replaced 3rd member in car , put new axel seals in , and replaced axels . I also drilled 50 holes in the backing plates , bead blasted and painted orange . Today i'll put new brakes on , had the drums turned last week . I can't drive the car yet , no wiring are brake lines yet . later Peck

i drive a 3500 lb car with a spool in it every day for the past 2 and 1/2 years. 100 miles or more at a time. it has been on 3 and 600 mile trips. the car makes just above 500 hp and runs 12.00 in the 1/4 i do donuts and drive like an ass all the time the car has a 8 1/2 10 bolt with a mini spool. i just recently put moser stock replacement axles in it. all that dricing is done with cheeter slicks too.

I ran a full spool in my ' Buick for several years. I only swapped for a Locker because I bought a complete used chuck with different gears set up with the locker. I run Moser 31 spline street/strip axles and never had a problem. Infact, I still don't care for how the locker 'locks' when accelerating in a corner etc...
The spool was much more predictable-it pushed, all the time. The locker will be 'open' going into a corner, then if you accelerate a little too much, it locks and starts pushing. Not that I haven't learned to deal with this, I just don't personally care for it. If I had another spool kicking around for the Olds rear, I would put it in and take out the Locker. I just don't want to break up the other set of gears right now as I think I might be going back to them soon.

  24. now that is practical experience!!! cheers man good Idea.

It depends on you.My Falcon has one and i drive it were ever i need to go.I am very respectfull of it when its raining on sharp corners or on gravel roads but its duable. It is a bitch tring to turn sharp with the spool in a parking lot with no powersteeing and a small steering wheel as others have mentioned ,and you will learn with time to negotiate (and avoid when possible) sharp turns before you get there.Combine this with a 4spd. and a nose high stance were you cant see shit and it gets real fun.If you can get passed these things you will love it on a drag strip .I personally dont think a mini spool is as bad as people make it out to be.I recently rode in a hotrod with a locker and i thought it was more dangerous ,cuz it was unpredictable on corners and even on straight aways when you lay in to it...
