Hello, I have a few questions about tri 5 chevy frames.... First are the 4 doors and 2doors frames the same. I know the convertibles have an extra cross piece. Are the 2dr sedans the same as a hardtop? Do the frames have the serial number on them?

as you said, except for convertibles, frames are the same for each year, not sure about year to year interchange.

Should have a partial serial number stamped on the top of the frame, roughly under the driver seating area.

Frames are the same except convert. Squirrel is correct about number on the frame. There are different frames though as far as two "C" channels welded together versus one piece ones, which really aren't one piece. They are called california frames and/or nascar frames. I don't know if either is true, but I have owned both and you can definitely tell the difference when looking at them, even in the car.

Hardtop frames have extra body mount to the sedan frame. Can be found re-pop. Just a simple weld on bracket. Seamless is the way to go. To the best of my knowledge Canada made a completely boxed frame. One step better than seamless. Feal free to correct me if Im wrong. Or let me know if you know where one is. :)

  7. '55 & '56 Frames are similar or so close ya' can call them the same. '57s are different, primarily from the cowl forward.

2-door and 4-door frames are the same. 2-door hardtops have an extra body mount on each side in the door jamb area.

I think station wagons have an extra body mount in the rear kick-up area.

And ... as Squirrel said, convertibles are by themselves with a heavy I beam X-member, a reinforcement/stiffener on the bottom of the main frame rails and a couple of extra body mounts in the trunk area.

The seamless frames also look like the front clip has been cobbled on.

Just thought i'd add that 57's have square frame horns in the front and a drain plug in the bottom of the rear end that 55's and 56's don't. Also one minor difference between 55 and 56 is that the 55's have narrower rear shackles.
