Need some advice from anyone who has ever dealt with people in New Zealand. I am about to make a sale to someone in New Zealand for a few grand. I have talked to the guy a few times and he seems legit, but now that its time to pay, He is saying he is going to send a bank Cheque and needs my full name, Address (not a problem) and my Bank Account number. Asking for my bank account number threw me. Im not really willing to send that info.

Can someone in New Zealand pay through paypal? and should I demand this?

Just want to be on the safe side, I dont nirmally do much out of country business.

    Thanks
    -Joe-

Unless it's a direct deposit, why would he need that? You could open a new account, if needed, to look after this transaction I suppose. That way it's seperate from any other accounts you have. The request sounds just a bit off, to me. Talk to the people at your bank, they know how to safe guard a transfer of funds. Best of luck.

He does not need your bank account number to send you a Cashier's check, Money Order , or anything more than your correct name and address.......what you do with his payment is your business........DO NOT reveal anything like your account #'s to someone you do not know.......better safe,.........you know the rest..

I have sold parts to England, Australia and Sweden ... I always had them go to Western Union ... and I have never had a problem. :D

You can have him do a wire transfer directly to your bank account. I would open a new account just for this transaction just to cover your ass...although my bank told me I didn't need to as having a bank account number wouldn't help anyone (they are on the bottom of every check you write anyway)

The best, quickest and surest way to transfer money is a direct wire transfer to your account.

Another vote for Western Union. Never had to give my account # and never will.

If it is any help, I have paid for parts in the States when I was back in New Zealand with Western Union. Tell the guy to go to a NZ Post shop & they will be able to sort it for him. From memory it isn't a cheap way of doing it but it is fairly instant, as opposed to waiting for banks to clear payment etc.
    Hope that helps.

not directly related, but, ATM, debit cards. Have him load it with proper amount of dollars. When you get the card, have him e-mail the pin. I do this for my wife when she was in China, still do for her son. Works like a charm.

    I sell a lot of parts overseas.Australia,Norway,Germany,Japan.

    Paypal is the easiest.
I also process credit cards.Had problems when their banks are closed.
But I guess you're not set up for that, anyway.
Transfers are ok,but have the monet sent as US funds.
Don't worry about account #'s,worthless with out a PIN.

    I won't do Western Union,never.
Or overseas money orders. Too easy to get burned.

  14. I've recieved money from Sweden and Australia via wire transfer. Very easy, low risk, just set up a cheap savings account to get the money and close it after you get the funds. Be aware your bank may hit you for $20 or so per transfer as a fee. Western Union would be my second choice. With the wire he gets confirmation you, and only you, got the funds.

You'd be abseloutely nuts to consider PayPal on a high dollar transaction, the chances for fraud are too high, the fees would be insane, and I'm not sure you can even use it for a dollar amount that high.

Wire transfer, Western Union, this guy does not need your acct number beware, plus if he was a real New Zealander he would had you converted the currency into sheep.

You need the BIC/Swift Bank Address, Bank Account, & Routing numbers for a Wire Transfer, not a Bank Check/Cheque... Some Banks have reciprical agreements to make Int'l Cashiers Checks.
eg: Banca Promex and First Interstate Bank

If it's done Bank to Bank it's safe, and wire recalls are rare...
Call and speak with your Bank to get the full info...
I've done Money Wires back and forth between Mexico, Japan, England, and the US.

by the sounds he is looking to do a transfer rathe then a cheque, better for both parties, if he has a credit card he should be able to do paypal pretty easy, worst comes to the worst he could probably hook me the $ and I could paypay to you ?? chances are one of the Kiwi's here knows him and can vouch anyway

Something you might check with your bank about is whether or not they can merely receive the money in your name, and hold it for pickup. I'm pretty sure they can do this, especially if you've got an account with them. This way the money goes into the "bank's account" and is held there until it is claimed by you and then transferred into your account.

Have used wire transfer from New Zealand before with no probs. Also use PayPay for smaller items.

Unfortunately sheep don't work so good as their wool gets crushed in the post and they don't look so pretty when they arrive! :D

I buy thousands of dollars worth of stuff every year from the States. Paypal is easiest but bank to bank transfer as it appears this guy wants to use is also foolproof and I use it regularly.and it is really safe.

Easiest for him is either a Bank check, for US$ drawn on a US bank like Citibank in NY or a wire transfer into your acct.

    1. Bank check - he doesn't need your acct number for this and either don't give it to him or ask him why he wants it. When you get the check - don't send the parts until your bank assures you the funds are cleared into your acct and there is NO chance the check will bounce.

I once accepted a bank check (thinking it was fine - as most people out here do) and later found out a bunch of blank bank checks had been stolen. The guy filled in the blank check, gave it to me and I was out my $$$.

    2. If he prefers to wire the money, he will need your bank acct number, but contrary to the comments on every Hamb post about overseas buyers - he can't grab your funds just by having your acct number. As brewsir pointed out above - your acct number is on every check you hand out anyway. Also as noted above - for a wire transfer he will need a Routing number which your bank can provide you - or it will be on your checks.

For me Western Union is a pain and riskier because I can't trace the funds if I get screwed, but I use Paypal all the time and it's as easy to do from NZ as from the US.

  25. Wire transfer only works one way, they can't pull it back out. I suppose they could keep the number and deposit more money later, but usually people don't do that. I set up a savings account for it. Be sure to ask what's needed to terminate the account first, though, they started charging me $3 a month and when I asked for it to be terminated it wasn't.

I've bought plenty of stuff from you guys, and find paypal is great, until my wife sees the card statement at the end of the month!!

Every currency, including Ugandan Scheckels, is higher than the US dollar right now. I'm buying struff for my Capri and it's killing me buying it from England.

Thanks for all the replys. I talked to him and he will be sending the bank check. He is really easy to deal with.

    Thanks again everyone!
