I have a th400 that I need rebuilt ASAP but my tranny guy was out of work for a bit because of an injury and now he is back to work but the jobs are piled up for him and he has no time to do my, I have all of the parts and a rebuild book and was wondering how difficult it may be to rebuild myself. I have plenty of knowledge rebuilding engines and doing everything else automotive wise as I do own my own shop but I have never done a tranny, so I would like to know if this would be something that I would be able to do.
There is at least one book out there on how to rebuild a turbo 400. The problem would be any special tools. look at this: http://www.themotorbookstore.com/howtowowiand.html
It's not to awfully bad. I've done 3 th400s so far. Special tools: snap ring pliers, thin wall 12 point 9/16 socket (I think) I turned an old socket down to fit in the recess in the VB, Big friggin flat blade screw driver, and several C clamps to put the drums back together. I have a video around the house somewhere that did a step by step thing, really low budget production but helpful. Good luck!
Get the Paul Zank video on the 400. Technical Video, 16325 E. Lincoln Drive, Fall Creek WI 54742-4813 Or go online to buy. These are outstanding videos and will make it seem like child's play.
buy the builders guide from a shop that sells the overhaul kit there about 20 the kit is about 45 and a shift kit is about 30 you need a snap press or you could make something that will work to compress the clutch pack a lip seal tool and some feeler gauges pm me in you need any more info just take your time and clean every thing really well
One very important thing also, keep everything clean. Use brakecleaner to clean off parts and paper towels to wipe off. DO NOT USE SHOP RAGS, they leave lint and stuff that clogs passageways. Paper towels will break down in trans fluid if any bits are left behind. later shawn
