What brands do y'all recommend OR suggest I stay away from. Hughes Performance, TCI, B&M ??? Trans is TH350, engine is a Pontiac making about 400 ft lbs starting at 2000 RPM in a fenderless '29 A Coupe. And yes, I know thats a lot of torque for a TH350 to digest but it's a light (~2500 lb) car. I used a 500 above stock convertor in my light weight (2000 lb) roadster and still had to keep my foot firmly on the brake at lights.
I personally like to stay away from the ***embly line ones, like b&m and tci...I have a tci, 10" 3500 stall unit in my coupe right now, but the price was right, and It was laying around, so in it went, but, I have had problems with them before.... I like ATI...they will re-man it for you and change it, down the road if you want, without having to buy a whole new one...
I have a guy in SC who builds all my converters. I would never run anything other than his, even on a mild application. He builds everything from mild mannered to full kill ***emblys like mine that take the torque of my blown Pontiac. My converter was custom built to my specs, full roller stuff, hardened everything, anti-balloon plate, yada, yada for under 500 bucks. He can probably whip you up a nice street converter for 2 bills, and have it to you inside of a week. Please do not buy a B&M, their inside hub comes to a small taper instead of a nice big surface which makes the front thrust wear quickly. Good luck and please post some pics of that Poncho motor!! -Abone. Torque Converter Services Coloumbia, South Carolina 1 800 537 7416 ask for Cameron
Hey Abone. Ain'tchoogotta 4 speed in that nasty sedan? Cause if you've got an auto, I had better learn to shift
GO with a higher stall than you're thinking of in a light car with a ton of torque - something in the 28-3K range.. I've run an ATI and a TCI and both held up well. Heard bad things about the B&M's but never had any personal expierence with them.... Abone - can your buddy do ford AOD converters? Going to need one for the '50 F2...
