How about a towing company with a flat bed to get it to the shipper?
Hopefully someone here will come to the rescue and help you out but thats the only idea i have.. you got AAA ?

I live in San Diego and drive through Cardiff everyday. I know where the shipper terminals are as well...which one are you using? The DAS terminal in El Cajon is just a few blocks from my house.
The state of CA will not allow the tires of an unregistered car to touch the road...you can trailer it or you can have it registered. If the car runs and you get some sort of tag for it, then I would be happy to pick it up and drive it to the terminal for you.

Kent, get with Barefoot in this post . He needs to get a car from Grand Rapids to Bakersfield, CA. See if he'll pick up your car, pick up his and meet in Oklahoma or someplace else central. It would be a three day round trip. And gas won't be $730.

try http://www.uship.com/ i have used them 10 times in the last 2 years all good.
shippers bid on your shipment. i had a 53 stude moved in 2 days in a enclosed trailer
cheap!!(they used a flat bed wrecker on each end to load and un load) lots of truckers use it to fill in loads to get home.
    Good luck, Bob

My pickup has a 460 gas engine with a 3speed ****** so fuel would indeed be more then $700....

I'll see what I can do and if I get a tag I'll let you know. I've been spoiled here in Michigan, they give one 14 days to "drive it directly home" without a plate!

Too bad I don't work at the local Ford dealership as a mechanic anymore or I could use a dealer plate...

I'd be using the DAS shipper....yes I know its a bit limiting having to drop off and pickup at a terminal, but otherwise it would be running me close to $1200 door to door for the haul.

  8. you might even get a moving permit, not sure if you need to completely register or not. might try to email them and find out.

I flew out to LA, Bought a pick up and got a U-haul towdolly. I had to qualify for there Good tow. endorcement .The tow unit had to out weigh's the car being towed.

I went to Long Beach got a 1956 Stude Skyhawk, towed it 2018 miles. The Pick up & Hawk did not have current plates. I went to San Pedro, In a cab. A gal did not have current plates on her car and they Impounded it, The fine was around $400.00, + more buck's.

I Got One way trip ticket' for both. They were watching me in Ca. and other states, I had the old black & gold plates on, with the Permit taped to the window's. The cops saw the Permit and never bothered me. Wheels on the ground Current plates etc.

What was the cost and did they require you to show proof of insurance?

CA will issue a trip ticket for vehicles leaving the state.
Years ago it only costed $10. Probably tripled by now but that's the safest way. BTW, you might check with triple A for info on a trip ticket. Calling DMV might be difficult to get info...if you know what I mean ;) . Good luck.

  14. Come on. What can it cost to flatbed the thing 21 miles? $75 TOPS? What's with all the overthinking?

I got them in Calif. I paid at the time $10 or $20 for each, I had a lien ***le on the Hawk. I needed a signature on something , I tracked the tow co. down. This was 6 to 10 years ago.

The DMV Gal said this needs to be done also, the other Gal said the car is leaving the state and never coming back, give it to him.

Come to think of it, in Minnesota You can get a 21 day permit. If Michigan has the same Your good to go, Mail or UPS it Out to Ca.

The car can be driven if you either get an emergency operation permit (good for 30 days) or a 1 day trip permit. EOP use to cost $13.

Well, looked on the CA DMV site and found a "one trip permit" costs $17.

Just wonder if they would issue one without me being physically in California. Does anybody know for sure if they require proof of insurance for the one trip permit or not?

Thanks for tips and helping wade-through burocratic red-tape and paperwork. The reason for the over-thinking is I'm not to thrilled to have some socal wrecker service I know nothing about get the car and haul it off somewhere....I've gotten ripped off by tow guys in the past and don't want to repeat that again. Sure, they might quote $75 but it seems it always turns into a "difficult haul" and the guy holds the car hostage for a couple hundered bucks more. I'm open to the idea though if somebody can reccommend a good flatbed service.

    Thanks
    Kent

You have to have a body to stand in line. You want to get there early, I was a Hour and a half early and was 8th in line. It's best to call.

The rollback sounds like the answer. Do you have Triple A, I guess they would want your card.

  19. You sure are making a bigger mess than is necessary here. Can't your shipper recommend a legit guy to haul it to them? The seller won't drive it 21 miles with the plates they removed?
