Well, it took 10 hours, but here it is. Most of the time was spent masking and doing some quick body work. As I've said in other threads, I wasn't looking for a pro paint job, just something to make the car look a little better for my friend's wedding, and to cruise the car around this summer. I think it turned out pretty good. Tomarow its going to get buffed.

Looks great. If you rattle canned it in blue metallic with no clear, you might be disappointed with the buff job. I did that once, and cutting into and exposing the metallic can cause problems (mine went dead flat with no hope after a few months of exposure to the weather.) We theorized that the alum was exposed to the surface and oxidized (whereas the unbuffed alum was coated with a thin coat of paint resin even when the metallic was at the surface.) You might try a small spot somewhere before you get carried away. Anyway the color and car looks great.

  9. Cool...you cheap bastard!!!Just kidding. I like it.

  10. Well shit, that looks pretty good. But, as mentioned, if there's no clear, DON'T buff it!

Looks pretty good, those little clip-on things that fit on top the can to make it kind of like a "gun" help a whole lot.

Just spray the inside of the wheel-wells black next.

I hate masking off all the trim, takes forever, seems to have come out good though. Thought it looked good to begin with though.

Moloko, what did you do for the prep before you started spraying (besides masking off)? What did you strip the previous "paint" with? And what brand spray did you use?

I really like the way that turned out.

Dammit Boy!!! I've seen a whole lot of spray can paint jobs, and most of 'em looked like shit. This is by far the best I've ever seen to come out of a pressure can . This ole boy could be murder w/a good gun and a little bit of schoolin' . Keep up the good work . BTW, how many cans did it take ? Ole Pork

Looks great, a cheap way to get back in traffic and look cool. I've actually seen some pretty decent rattle can jobs before. Krylon 32 here on the hamb is the king of rattle can paint jobs. He says just stand back a little ways and let it flow. Have fun cruzin. Gary

    Ok, lemme answer some questions.

All I did for prep was basic body work (I half-assed pop-riveted in some patch panels and then bondo's them). I sanded the entire car with 120 grit sand paper to even out the old rusty cracked paint. Then I washed it, and cleaned the surface with mineral spirits.

The paint I used was duplicolor, and thats important. It has one of the fancy "fan" nozzels on it. Not a normal spray'n'pray nozzle like you get on Krylon. I used sandable primer, about 4 cans, and then wet sanded that with 2000 grit.

Then I used like 8 cans of T257 medium blue enamel. Took 3 coats, and then wet sanded it again. I think it took like 4 cans of white because it sucked to get coverage.

Then I used about 6 cans of clear coat on it.

And I did have one of the little "gun" attachments for the can, or else my finger would have fallen off an hour into it.

Looks good man - but - ahhhh - um - gotta ask - were the car and the truck that are in the back ground pictures parked there when you bombed it ?

If so, when and if you buff out the blue car - line the other car and truck up and buff the over spray off of them too.

While you might not see it - just rub your hand across the hood of the car and truck and feel if it is rough like sand paper.......

Again - just going by the pictures, just hope the car and truck were not parked close.

There is something just plain damn fun 'bombing" a car....... not like I'm an artsy fartsy type guy, but the last one I did (some time agao) was more fart than art for sure....

Im not trying to be a prick, and I would NOT say this if you didnt in the title state you were seeking opinions...but it looks like a streaky mess. I mean, yes its primarily one color...but why not spray some sealer or prime on there with a cheap gun or something? It would be streak free and protected from the elements. I dont get the rattle canning a whole car. A. It took 10 hours, B. It probably ended up being about as much as a spray job (including cheap gun purchase and cheap sealer/primer/what-have-you) and C. The outcome is very streaky, in photos, from 15 feet away.

Again, please dont take it that Im being an asshole, I just dont understand the concept and fair being fair, opinions were asked for.

Reasons: I don't have power in my garage, which means no air, which means no spray gun. My only friends that have a compressor big enough have their tank full of rust and water because they leave the tank open, and never use it because it "takes too much power". So that leaves me the option of a wagner power sprayer pretty much. It doesn't look as streaky in real life as it does in the pictures.
