Well I finally had a couple of nights off, & made some great progress on the rpu. I got the ****** hump all done, and I am SO happy to put that behind me.

The hump is pretty huge because the motor is mounted pretty high. I wasn't really sure how I was going to make the hump. It seemed doubtful that I was suddenly going to become Jesse James and form one on an english wheel, so I decided to make a form out of 3/16" round bar to skin in pieces.

Once I got the form done, I took the body off and went to work. The nice thing about doing it this way is that it is really easy to make posterboard templates of each piece, since you can trace it from underneath the hump and it is the perfect size every time-no guesswork.

I also like doing it this way because it is pretty forgiving to weld up. Sheetmetal can be tough to **** weld, because if the fit up isnt perfect, it is easy to burn through, especially where there are any gaps. Since every seam has 3/16" roundbar behind it, it is way easier to weld up.

I got the hole hump done, with the exception of the last panel the goes where the shifter comes through. I will put the body back on & make a template so the the hole for the shifter is in the right place.

Heres some pics as it sits, I gotta get some sleep. I was at the shop from 4pm saturday til 9am sunday.....

That's an interesting approach. Looks like a lot of work. Nicely done.

Really looks nice...but so does the rest of your work. Like a couple of the others I'm interested in your seats. Where did you get them?

Thank you very much for the nice words, I appreciate! Yeah, it was a little grinding, but not too bad really. I think I only used $892 worth of roloc discs:eek: 3M loves me now

The seats are aluminum Kirkey seats that I got from Speedway. They are Kirkeys so-called "bomber" seat. I really wanted to use a more traditional bomber, but they were all a little too wide to fit. These fit perfect, so I gave up & went with them.

They really look better then I thought, and I am really amazed how comfortable they are! The cover has foam padding, and is really very nice to sit in.

Heres a link to the seats:

    Thanks again

Well me & my dad got the rpu body back on the frame tonight. The good news is it all fits on fine after getting the tunnel & hump done....... I still gotta finish the ****** hump be forming a small piece around the shifter, but its mostly there. I want to get the floor and toeboards wrapped up, then finish the floor over the bell housing. It's like a never ending project-just when you clear one big hurdle, you realize how much you still have to go:rolleyes:

I really want to get this thing done for the Turket Rod Run, especially sine my dad looks like he'll easily make it with his T modified. Heres a couple pics as it sits

Man, I just want to get this thing done after seeing your videos of your roadster running with the 455:D

This really did work pretty well though.

It solved a lot of problems-
The round bar was super easy to shape by hand.

It left no "mystery" of how the hump would clear the ****** before it was skinned, you could totally visualize what it would look like skinned.

It made it easy to weld up, since the roundbar was under each welded seam, it was impossible to burn through the sheet metal

And it was lots easier than trying to bend a big piece into some shape that somehow would fit and look right

Yeah, it took a little grinding, but that was really easy since the welded seams were outside corners that grind easily. Plus the welds cold be nice & hot to sink through the sheetmetal & into the roundbar made them very low in profile

Mainly I am glad that it is almost done:p
