This is off topic, but I trust the opinion of HAMBer's. My girlfriend wants me to move to Vegas, and I've never been there, and don't know anyone from there. Sooooo, if anyone could share their opinions on Vegas as a place to live, it would be MUCH appreciated. It doesn't necessarily have to be as a response to this message, feel free to send me a PM. I am looking for something other than, it's nice. Crime, economic factors, cost of living in general, etc. Also, if anyone owns a photography business out there, or knows anyone that's looking for an amazing all around photographer, please let me know. The job hunt begins. Thanks all!
I dont live there but my famliy does (since the 60's)and I used to go every couple of months. Pros; Great nightlife, great entertainment, great places to eat, growing as fast as any other city in the nation. Cons; Too hot- have to run your a/c 24/7 in the summer, hard to gamble and live there, you will eventually lose everthing you own if you gamble at all. (if you dont gamble dont worry). Lots of low life from LA moving there bringing drugs and crime with them. Thats my thought, I'll let a few of the hambers who live there expound, good luck
I have a couple friends who work with shelby, one lives there one only does the week days. I know Bud doesnt gamble and aint a big nite lifer, he thinks it is ok. But as fastest growing cities go...................sex, drugs and crime also grow. Not that the sex aint bad
I lived there 7 years... On a nice Cul-de-Sac in a 1963 built Ranch just a mile E. of the Stratosphere. Doubled in value in 2.5 years. Enjoyed my pool, weather you could always count on, and good job opportunities. Only went to the Casinos when out of towners came to visit... I worked @ McCarran, so I was insulated from a lot of the daily crap of panhandlers, prostitutes, and drug dealers but the worsening traffic and random BS on a daily basis finally got to me... Hearing gunshots while floating in my pool that killed a guy on Maryland & Sahara, a Metro Airborne Unit chasing some a$$hole though my backyard, Constantly hit up for money everywhere, having to deal with the house across the street that became a crackhouse while the bank tried evicting them, not to mention the ever increasing stream of homeless/drug addicts/bums that were attracted to the "New Huntridge Circle" park a mile away... Good news is if you're thinking of buying, the real estate market is softening back in Las Vegas, so you could pick something up much cheaper than, say two years ago... Good Luck!!!
Las vegas is crowded, traffic sucks, houses are expensive, the people in general are not friendly (h.a.m.b. brothers excluded), the smog will choke a horse, i dont know about work there is probably alot of jobs available. try an hour and half north, a town called St. George, Utah. The air is clean, its the landscape photographer's paradise, lots of stuff to do outside, the people are friendly and there are opportunities out here for entepeneur's of all typesan and Vegas is only and hour and a half away. On the downside, the beer is only 3.2% alcohol, not much in the way of nightlife unless you make your own, the long time locals are wierd and the mormon church runs the politics.
the fact that the only beer is 3.2 would keep me away (I lived in Mn for 15+ years and don't ever want to be close to that shit again)
i read an article in a news paper or mag and it was about cancer . St. George got alot of fallout from the nuclear tests in NV it has 500 times higher cancer rate out of the whole US. i liked las vegas when i was there. i lived there for about 3 years made crazy money for my age. i was 20 and made like 10 grand in about 6 months. i lived off of rainbow and russell at the end of a complex not alot of traffic on my road had an 1100 sf apt for 800 a month. it's all in where you live in vegas and where you go that determines if you have to see or deal with homeless and drugs ect.
Was just there visiting my sister that has lived there the past 20 years. She is ready to leave there. HOT, water is expensive, AC is a must. at 6am it was 85 degrees. While we were there we visited Hover Dam. The water level on lake Mead it 55 feet low! In the past 5 years it has dropped 10 feet/year. Las Vegas area is growing at a rate of 6,000 people every month. At the present rate of growth and water comsumption there will be a severe water shortage in 5 years. But jobs are plentyful, houses are expensive and you need to live in a gated comunity to feel some what safe. I'm not a gambler, the place didn't do much for me. Food, gas, and most other things cost about the same as things do around here. (except water, ice, and Pepsi or other drinking beverages which cost 50% more.) Gene
Believe it about the Radiation... My wife was on a Radiogenic Diseases project, and there were, and still are alot of cancer(s) in the downwinder population... I was up @ Trop & Durango for a while... Yup, nicer neighborhood, but still had dead bodies now and again :-(
I live in vegas, i have been over 3 years, and things have changed drastically since i have been here. It all depends on where you live. I live about 20 miles away from the strip so it is not bad at all. I dont gamble, so that doesnt bother me. There are lots of oppurtunities available for employment. send me a pm if you have any questions.
a friend has been living there over 20 years, when we visit we usually stay with them, they used to be way out in the country but town is growing up around them (they're right by the new beltway). They seem to do ok there, lotsa family life and lotsa work. it is HOT in the summer, nice in the winter, plenty of work if you want to make money. Traffic is a hassle....houses are expensive...it's not for me....
Honestly this place sucks. I have lived here for about 22 years and it keeps getting worse. The crime rate is getting higher the police dont give a fuck. The jails are getting full and the mayor justs sits on his ass and does nothing. I was involved in a hit and run in may and the police told me they wouldnt come out because i didnt get the plate. The cost of living isnt so bad. The market is flooded right now because all these people where refinancing there homes and getting tanked in them. So they owe way more than what it is worth. We have the second highest foreclosure rate in the country. You can pick up a house at a good price right now. Dont plan on alot of car shows here either. There are 2 big ones every year and you probably know what they are. Then some very very small ones through the year. All the other ones are absolutely horrible. And yes you do have to run your a/c 24/7 and my bill for this month will probably be about $400. Nice huh......... In fact last weekend it was 119 degrees. So in a nutshell this place fuckin sucks. Do do it you will regret it. Move to Austin TX os norcal. That is where I am going to go when the market starts to get hot here. If you have any questions PM me and i will give you my phone number and tell you more. I know of a couple different places that would hire you.
I agree. Never lived there but when I visited there on a roadtrip I made the mistake of leaving my dirty clothes in a trash bag in my trunk. The plastic melted into the clothes it was so hot. Hot. If you're going through the pain of moving state I'd sure as hell consider Austin or many places in CA first..
My sister lives in Vegas and is counting the days until she gets to leave. Crime, drugs, vice - all the trappings of any large city but Vegas seems to have its own brand of desperate lives. She put her kids in Catholic school just so they wouldn't have to go to the public schools and my sister is pretty liberal. I'd look elsewhere if considering a move. Now, I thought Pittsburgh was turning around and becoming a nice place to live. You could always come to Chicago but be prepared for sticker shock in housing.
2 years ago my in laws sold their house and got out of vegas. They were there because of low taxes, but other costs off set any tax savings. My mother in law said housing prices were about to crash and sold at exactly the right time. they lived in a gated community and are old so they weren't involved with gambling, drugs etc. they are happy to be out of vegas. My grandfather told my dad "those gangsters didn't build that town to do any good, stay outa there". I have taken his advice There is enough trouble in the world I don't need to go to a place built on trouble and human weakness.
Is the Stratosphere where the Landmark used to be? I lived in Vegas in 1963/4 when they built the Landmark. They had to stop construction because it was so far out of plumb. Some of us called it the leaning tower of Vegas. I think it sat as an unfinished shell for quite a few years...Seems to me like it was on the corner of Stardust and Paradise but I could be wrong. Oh yea something else flashed in my mind. Somewhere east of Maryland (sp?) Parkway and south of Sahara or Desert Inn Road a friend of mine's parents had a bomb shelter buried underground in the middle of nothingness (at that time). It was fully stocked with everything a small family would need for probably a month. Of course being 16 yrs old we used to go there with girls and beer and stuff.
My grandfather told my dad "those gangsters didn't build that town to do any good, stay outa there". I have taken his advice There is enough trouble in the world I don't need to go to a place built on trouble and human weakness.[/quote] DID you know Vegas was built with Mormon money, some big shot with the church had the "nads" to swing it , the 'Church' bad mouths the town but made a shit load of money off the place I have friends there,I can visit for three days, MAX, then the traffic drives me crazy! and i get the "get the fuk out of here!!" feeling, My Buddy is in Henderson, and he likes it, no LDS holier than thou 'tude', like here in SLC. ,,, Or StGeorge! AND who the hell wants more than one wife any way!!!
its hot and shitty ! ive benn here since 94. the crime is just like anyplace. people are rude for the most part and houses have gotten expensive. its hard to drive your hot rod when its 119+ outside. but on the other hand i cant complain to much cause i own a house 4 cars and a pool.. JUST DONT START GAMBLING !!!!
I am in the Air Force and moved here from San Antonio Tx...I hate it! Housing here is stupid expensive(it is a buyers market right now but don't let that fool you it just means you will pay 300K for your house instead of 380K) and I can't afford a decent house so I am stuck in some tiny shithole duplex on base. I used to own a really nice 1700sq ft house in San Antonio and I only paid 100K...same house here (from the same builder even) would cost 300-350K. My military paycheck cant hand a 2000 dollar mortgage payment. As mentioned in this thread the people suck...customer service in this town is horrible everywhere (except casinos). Criminals and panhandlers everywhere especially on my side of town (north east). It is so bad that they have actually suggested we not go to the Walmart right outside the gates of the base here. This town is very dirty, trash everywhere. It is stupid hot here for 3 months in the summer. Like over 100 everyday and over 110 most days. The rest of the year is pretty nice weather wise but I miss trees and grass. BTW the AC's on base are not big enough to cool the house properly in the summer...I keep my AC set on 78 and it runs all day...even at 3 in the morning it is still running. The only good thing about this place is all of the places around it. Mount Charleston is very nice for camping and hiking. Red Rock Canyon is beautiful...there are alot of mountains and canyons around here. Plus the Grand Canyon is only a couple hours away and Zion National park is right up in Utah. Bottom line is this is a place to visit(and not in the summer) not live. I can't wait for my next assignment so I can leave this place. BPD
You are thinking of picking up and moving to a place you have never been and know nothing about because a girlfriend wants you to???? Wow.
Went there for my bro-in-law's wedding. I'm not a gambler, but fun for a weekend. Seemed empty to me, if that makes any sense. Wouldn't live there.
I have lived most of my 29 year old life in Las Vegas except for 6 of those years i lived in Laramie WY. It's funny as polar oppisite as the two places are they draw many parallels and i like them about the same. I'm drawn to Vegas because of my family. Both my wife and I are second generation native Las Vegans. I've seen the town change a lot in my life time and while I was away the changes seemed to be faster. It's hard to say if I would choose Vegas as a home if i had no family ties here. I don't believe that there is any perfect place to live. I would decide what things are most important to you in a town and make sure what you choose will fit your needs. If all else fails go where the money is and vegas has a thriving economy. Brickster
I have friends that moved there and stayed four years before moving back to the Detroit area. The above is all true. There are also other things that were brought up. Anything you might want to do involves gaming, even if in the background. How many slot machines can you see at a grocery store anyway? Want to go to the movies? Most are at the casinos. There is no grass unless you are at a golf course (I'm from the midwest and like grass between my toes). My friends said most of the people were as real as Pam Anderson's ti....um, busom. I've been there once and I'll say it's a nice place to visit, but I wouldn't want to live there.
