O/T...Slapping a motor on the Schwinn !~!

  1. Mine's on a Huffy. I'm not that happy with it. It's like a binary deal with two states...... Full On and Full Off.

Hmmm, might need some tuning. I can go part throttle no problem.

Looks like you all are just relying on coaster brakes?

I've been contemplating stuffing one of my XR75 motors in my cruiser, but I think it would almost be easier to start a frame from scratch.

Ahhh!!! Shades of my misbegotten youth.

My first bike was a Schwinn Whizzer - sans engine - my Dad bought it for me the Christmas before my seventh birthday, and had the guy he bought it from take the engine out of it, and sold the thing; he knew that if he had that engine around, I'd get it back in that bike, and both of my folks were not too keen on "motorbikes", and my Dad was not at all mechanically minded. So, I grew up riding a "used-to-be". And yes, they were heavy, and spooky at anything nearing unreasonable speed. My buds and I used to ride and push our bikes as far up the San Gabriel Mountains as we could reasonably go, and then see who could get to the bottom first;   . Wrecks, broken bones and bikes, scars to last a lifetime. I still had that bike when I went into the Navy in 1960, but while I was away chasing whatever I was chasing, the folks sold off all of my stuff - including my '51 Ford; something about me not taking care of it, and they didn't want it around. :(

I know, Cruzr. I think most folks, as they start to get older, look back at their youth, and contemplate resurrecting parts of it; I have checked out the abailability of Whizzer stuff a few times in the last couple of years, and it is truly amazing what they are going for - I think my Dad paid ten or fifteen bucks for that bike, and sold the engine for almost as much, back in 1948, and it was in very good condition. I have thought about doing something like you have, just for the Grand kids to mess with, but they're just growing up too damned fast, and I only have the pleasure of their company a couple of times a year. Besides, I'd be tempted to ride it, and I can't affort any more broken things on my bod.

    Have fun with your project.

My buddy's got an original restored whizzer in his bedroom. Him and his dad restored it in college, we were roommates. That is what first got me hooked on the old scoots. I bought my schwinn back then and just used it as a bike for years. Once I had my son I got a 7 speed crusier (easier with him on the back) and the schwinn sat. Until I saw a post on here a few years ago. Since then the Schwinn has a new life. Now my boy is old enough he wants one! Still too small though :)

Before I could drive cars (legally), I was into putting motors on bikes, go kart type things and anything else I could get with wheels. I built them for friends until the kid next door got hurt on one I built him. After that I kept my designs to myself. Here's one of mine from @ 1967. Note the "V-Plex" belt clutch for belt drive and cool "springer" front fork. That bike was good for @40 MPH. I remember that specific bike broke in half on a dirt road leaving me with the handlebars and my ass on the road. The brain bucket was donated by my uncle who was a USAF lifer and it was supposedly a "jet Jockey's"from the 50's.

at Crown we are working on a bike that will already have the motor in it. it's looking like the whole bike with an ungoverned 80cc motor and a triple clamp fork will be about $400. I'll post some pics when we get the prototype.
