What will need to be done to do this swap? I want to use the complete ***y. because of the Bendix brakes and the 3.55 gears, the splined shaft out of the torque tube seems to be larger, will it hook right up? which coupler/ujoint ***y do I use?How about the okie bushing? Thanks for any help

  2. I'm not 100% certain, but I think the '54 PG rear was 3.73. Not sure about the splined shaft, but other than that it should be a pretty simple swap.

Which coupler do I use? 3sp or PG,my new oakie bushing for the 49 does not slide over the splines of the 54 PG shaft, are the splines the same size?

Haven't seen a '50-'54 PG torque tube yet that won't accept a standard trans u-joint.

I put a 53 powerglide rear under my 49...it's a straight bolt in. I looked today and the ujoint slipped right on the spline. I also pulled the front seal and replaced it with an Oakie bushing...it took a little to get the old bushing out...I used the special puller available from National Chevy but it still gave me a little problem. The Oakie went in pretty easy.

FYI, the 53-54 stick rearends are 3:70, 49-52 stick are 4:11. 50-54 automatics are 3:55.

Pull an axle shaft out of each rear and compare them---maybe the shafts interchange and you wouldn't have to change the whole ***embly.

I haven't actually done it, but I know that the 49-54 rearend ***embly will work in 41-48 cars as is, and that you can swap axles and drums around between them. Nothing special required. You should be able to put the 49-54 hubs and brakes on the front of your '47 as well. 51-54 have the better brakes.

Should be a bolt-in deal. Even with the 41-48s. The PG rears have a taller gear set which you'll like better.
