Dropping the rear of a 66 5 to 6 inches and was wondering if any of you guys have used other shocks in place of the drop shocks or have just fabbed your own shock relocators? Thanks in advance.
I have a 60 Chev PU I lowered w/5" dropped springs in the back. I installed the old shock and measured the lenght from eyelet to eyelet, took that measurement to the local O'Reillys Auto Parts and told them I needed a shock that had that measurement at ride height. Took home the Monroes and they worked like a charm. Try to find the most experienced parts guy there, one who knows how to look in the parts books. Good Luck.
Thanks BobbyV, do you remember what yr and make they were from, got some duffases around these parts.
you can look up all the dimensions right online from monroe I believe. that's how I got the shocks for my cars. just figure out what the mounting points are and the compressed/extended measurements need to be. pretty easy actually. my shocks ended up being stock shocks for a 48 ford, go figure.
Gotta second the experienced parts guy thing, I bought mono springs for my 61 F100 and dropped about 3.5 inches out of the ride. I just called my favorite parts guy, told him what I needed and the next day he had me fixed up. Rides like a dream.
Hey bobbyV ....what is the part # for those Monroe shocks.....I'm getting ready to change the ones on my 65' Chev. and I'm sure the Monroes would be cheaper then going thru Brohters or Classic Ind.
I'd have to track down the numbers but they probably won't work for your application. From 60-62 I believe used a different rear shock setup. The shock runs off the back of the rear trailing arms and continues toward the rear of the frame. Requires a longer shock than the later years 63-66. Most suspension kits you see are specified 63-66 for this reason and also for the torsion bar front ends.
Thanks guys, that was my thinking you can almost buy a whole set of shocks for the price of 1 and 1/2 drop ones.
