I bought a 54 pontiac about a month ago but on the weekend it died twice, first time I cleaned the battery terminals and got it home. Then I replaced the pos and neg leads, gave em a good scratch up and did everything up nice and tight. Worked fine for about a day, then died again. I thought the battery might be dead, although i was getting power to lights etc. Tried jump starting it, nothin, charged the battery, nothin, just "click" So I'm thinking my starters gone, but I dont know what to replace it with?!? Can someone show me what starter goes in these? Is there one from another engine that would work??? Sorry for the silly newbie type question but I'm starting to get very tired! Cheers-
I would just rebuild the starter with new brushes and bushings. If that doesn't help then get it rewound. Old school repairs still work on the stuff that isn't on the shelf.
Thanks for the welcome! Transmission is the orignal manual 3 speed, very slow...Nice lookin project though, would look tough with no bonnet and nice engine
Thats an idea, I've seen the new solenoids on ebay for $20 so might try one of them. I really want it done quickly though so I can get it out of this shit weather we're having.
And yeah its been converted to 12 volt, and tonight I put a brand spankin new battery in it. Still getting just "click"
Kool, mine had an auto, I reckon the manual box would be the better option, I actually put a 283/ powerslide in mine, not hooked up though. I changed my mind and now the str8 is getting a build to go back in, with a th700. Just a point to remember, if needed, 265 hemi rod bearings work in these babies!!
Gday all, Some pics of my 54 oz assembled pontiac. Was going to mild kustom but is just to original and drives so well just cant bring myself put my 3 deuce "y" block in it. Just need to get a 53/54 auto diff centre for it,55mph top speed sux. didnt mean to hijack but seamed to be a good spot to pu a pic. Clint
If all you are getting is a click, it is likely your solenoid is the problem. You can possibly fix it for free! Pull it off the solenoid and take it apart. You will find a copper plate in there. All you really have to do is flip it over and use the unburnt side. Oh, and take a file to the heads of the two contacts that it works against. I have fixed a number of them that way. Just be careful to get everything back together again the same way it came apart!
Wow didnt this post would get dug up again. Got the starter fixed by an auto elec, he rewelded the armature or something. Worked fine so I was happy to fork out 100 clams and get it back out of the rain. Went and saw my car tonight for the first time in over a month, really keen to start getting stuck into it. So thanks for your help roadsterbob, sounds like you had a good idea there. And unclechop, thats fuckin niiiiiiice!
