I'm getting ready to finalize the paint on my '60 Starliner and I want to take in as many panel jobs as I can. The idea for mine is white abalone flake panels with candy blue borders, but I'm still open to ideas.

    Here's mine:

But I also love Jav's old ride:

Love your car man... and that steering wheel is just unreal!

Here's some Watson panel jobs, as well as some Watson-style....

I don't have a scanner, so these are just photos - one is of the book they are in.

I hope they help ya out - A tasteful panel job should look great on your Starliner.

I really dig Watson's '59 Caddy and the '56 Ford was painted by Don Varner - it just has the look!

Damn that's a good lookin car Kirk, I know you'll come up with a panel style paint job that will be drop dead gorgeous, but looks good just as it is. Gary

How about something along the lines of the Mike Young/Jimmy Vaughn 60 chevy...
60 Starliners are made to be mild customs, but 61 Starliners can pull off the super stock look a little better IMO.

Blake did all the hard work... I narrowed the scallops down a bit and removed the one on the side panel, made a few color samples and did one reversed....

I think a lighter outline on a dark car looks better, although this one looks a bit odd since I started with a white car.. the fades might actually work...

Have you considered a Winfield "Jade Idol" style fade job instead?

I like them because they still accent the panels yet not in such a stark manner.

I kinda agree with Rikster. a dark car with lighter highlights usually looks better.. but I am sure you will pull off a 'negative' version.... (like that photo reference....)

the last version looks like that blue 58 T-bird that is sections (it was at ATL (used to be from the NW).

I guess I'm in the minority. I like the "negative" version better. No offense to Rik, but I like Blake's orriginal version with the scalop on the side panel. I think it keeps the front to rear flow going, matches the ones on the hood, and keeps the feeling of speed and aerodynamics of the orriginal body design.
I would keep them narrow like Rik did though.

Is it wrong to like the car just as it is? Crisp - Clean- Smooth - like a set of sheets in a s****y hotel room...

Nothing wrong with that, and I kinda agree with you.
But, as a few of us know, restraint is one of the hardest things to use when building a rod or custom;) .
I would drive it either way.

I like Rikster's layout the best. Andy Southard would be proud!
Think of it like you started with a certain light colored car and went in and paneled the large areas white, stripe it with a thin black line.

    Southard's '61(?) t-bird was black and white, out-a-site.

    stay up all night

    get stage fright?

    oh, alright.

I think I'm being swayed this way. I'd go with white instead of the light blue because I don't have the money to re-jamb and paint under the hood and trunk.

  23. I agree with Rikster too, I think it looks very nice with the dark paint and lighter lines.

    Good luck picking, though.

When it come to panel jobs, I prefer a nice Philipino mahogany...

Dude, you gotta put the dark on top.

don't have photochop access right now, but what if you used this scheme, but reversed it just on the roof??? i think that could be a hot ticket

Might not be a watson job!! But a nice subtle fade would be cheaper on materials if your on a budget and you would not have to worry about your jambing standing out as much??

That's a Winfield paint job. I was at his shop when that was in the booth.

If I ever win the lottery I'd love to have something from him.
