I have a 64 chevy truck with 6 lug wheel pattern and want to change to 5 lug will a newer 5 lug truck like a 70 model with disc brakes bolt up and will the trailing arms and all on the rear bolt up. Any help will be great.
you can get a rearend out of a 72 (i think thats when they changed bolt patterns) For it to drop right in it needs to be from a trailing arm set up if thats what you have also. I believe they are 1-2" wider
Looking for the least amout of work, grab 71-72 1/2 ton spindles because the 73 up has a larger tie rod hole. Grab the a-arms too because I think the lower balljoint taper is bigger than the 64.... or maybe try a new 71-72 joint in your old arms. REAR; low 66 is correct that the 70 went to a 1-1/2 wider rear track. It actually looks better in the wheel well. The 70 is still 6 lug so you need the 71-72 rear. Might get lucky and find the 3.07 gear where your 64 is most likely a 3.73. The 71-72 will bolt in, incl the panard & e-brake cables & u-joint. There is no axle shaft with 5 lugs to fit your narrow 63-69 style housing.
I just got mine redrilled. Easier than swapping for a unknown rear, plus mine has a posi. I am using the whole 72 disk front end, bolted in.
Go here for all the 60-66 info you might need. http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/forumdisplay.php?f=6 Check the 3rd "sticky" for the cheapest disc option.
I highly recommend digging through www.earlycl***ic.com for the details. I bought their front drop/disc spindle setup and it was worth it. saved a ****load of time in junkyards and it bolted together in a day. I think some of the tech articles on the website will list what swaps for what years. jonp
I just finnished "going through" my old mans truck(65 short step).Afterwards,I learned you can take the front X-member and all the goodies,up to 85,and bolt it into the frame.I used 71 front suspention, but the ball joints are a ball buster, thier not cheap. And yes,the 71-72 rear is just a bit narrower.I just redrilled the axels, and it worked out fine.-Kid
I've done a couple where we just unbolt the whole engine carriage and all off like a '78 modle and just swap 'em they bolt right up.
