Next year in shop cl*** i was thinking of making my own custom hot rod body styled after a t bucket i was wondering should i make a wood mold to forum the body on or should make like a metal skeleton out of 7/8 steel to the dimensions i want and then forum the metal on that or do a combo on both. Any info would me very much appreciated. At school we have all the appropriate metal working tools hammers, dollies, shrinker's, English wheal ect ect.
I'm doin mine useing wood bucks. I think getting a cowl to work from will make it ALOT easyer for you. I'm building a modified off of a 31 model a cowl wereas before i was trying to do the whole thing from scratch and it looked like **** doing it this way gives you body lines to work from and a useable cowl can be found for about $100- 250 I have about 350 in mine and the only thing i havent done from scratch was the cowl I'l send pics as soon as my bro comes over with his camera.
RatFinkForever, I'd like to hear more about your school's shops program. I teach high school metalwork and automotive myself, and am thinking seriously about having a hotrod project of my own in the shop for the keen students to "get their feet wet with". My students are midway through building a small English Wheel for shop use. Where's your school?
Hey, Head on over to metalshapers.org here on the web. A good deal of information on metalshaping and body building-free, no silly hats and no at***ude! Check their archives of posts on this subjects, better yet join up! Good luck, S****ey Devils C.C.
I go to A.R. MacNeill in Richmond are shop teacher is Phil Read we have a lot of projects on the go not all very Hamb related but i'll list them off a 1992 for Festiva that has been guted and had a new custom frame built for it and is going to have a 5.0 mustang motor put in it custom built suspension all done at the school nothing bought. We also have a 69 Stang we put a new floor in, a motorized shopping cart, 89 Lebarron race car custom tube frame role cage and once again an all custom built suspension. But last is my personal favorite my teachers 62 Plymouth FURY race car looks pretty neat. We have also made a bunch of go carts and custom bicycles.Hope to have a lot more cool projects when school starts next year. Also what school do you teach at.
I would go the route of making a whole inner structure out of 1in x1in square and possablely 2x1 box under the floor and for the door pillers if yout having them. The framework needs to be a fraction smaller than what you want the finished articial, so that the body panels dont touch the frame except where you attach the panels otherwise they may rattel or sqeak. And plug weld the floor about every 5in apart. Now if you should have a noise in the car body when done , i think the lord corp make an anty flutter compound to put between the frame and skin to stop this or chase up some coach and bodybuilding adheasive. Here is a pic of a 32 i built using this methard and i was a first attempt at building a car so i can recomend it.
Hey, Thas a great lookin '32 you've built there. Great detail work, and the fact it's powered by a Blue Oval........much better! S****ey devils C.C.
