That book has great info, but some of it is a bit too drag oriented. if that's what you're going for its great....if you're just wanting a "peppy" motor, go to:
    http://www.cliffordperformance.net/
    and
    http://www.stoveboltengineco.com/

i've got a 292 that i'm putting in my '53 chevy that's at a shop right now getting a mild performance cam, lifters, and springs. not too much, i'm just building a cruiser that i want to get outta "the hole" decently and be able to drive 80 on the freeway.

I am going to jump out here and ***ume that you gare not about 250-292 Chevy sixes and are looking for info on 235 Chevy, 270 - 302 Gmc motors. In that case Leo's book, as good as it is, will not help. Look for and old California Bill GMC power manual.

I've seen the book cwatson1953 mentioned... a great book, but, I'm not sure it applies to 235s. I could be wrong and perhaps others on here have used it to build 216/235s and the like. What size 6 is yours?

There was a reprint of a '53? book on modifying them on the shelvs at B & N a few years back but I don't remember the ***le or if it's still available or if the mods it proposes are recommended today either.

You do know that Chevy and GMC sixes are two totally different animals don't you?
An early GMC is more like a Buick 8 with two cylinders wacked off than it is like a Chevy.

    Maybe Bluto will chime in.
He runs a 302 GMC with a Wayne head in his '39 GMC

Thanks for all the help guys. I want to build a 270 302 gmc as some point for a roadster. I have several 228 gmc's, 216 and 235 and 250 chevys. I just really love these inline sixes and wanted to do a lot of reading up on them before I got one to build tough. They interest me a great deal. Keep coming with the ideas.

The Santucci book focuses on 250-292s, but has sections on 216-235-261 and other Chevy/GMC motors and says the info can, for the most part, be extrapolated to all GM 6s.

There are books by California Bill and Roger Huntington on hopping up 216/235s and GMC 6s and one includes a section on Buick 8s. I believe they are called "Hopping up a Chevy and GMC 6" Both are carried by Amazon, and all t he inliner suppliers

I never had a book. I'm not sure you need a book.

    GMC

    You need a cam.
Two pot if you wanna run 5 pot if you wanna work all the time
    Cast iron dumps
    Bread box oil pan

    AND a very strong gearbox
If your going to use a 12 port..... it's a bit more complicated

    Chevy

Don't bother any guy with any good running GMC will kick your ***

  12. ****er! Bluto, the Altered is going to get inline........I got a 250, I feel weak. Dad is laughing at my ideas, all the more reason to do it. GMC would give me wood, gotta keep looking. Have fun on the Continent my pal.

if any of you inline lovers arewanting a 261 you should drop me al ine. i've got one that needs an overhaul. we pulled it out of a 46 chevy a couple years ago and saved it.

now that i think about it, that job was a pita.

how different internally is a 261 from the 292? i do know this one's got insert bearings we had the pan off before we switched it out.

Two completely different engines. Not in the same family.

Ok what would you like to know about it. The 17yr plus old motor had a 583/607 bump stick it It was a daily driver for most of it's life. with 3:08 gears. It ran 15.15 flat 24-7 any time of day with the 3:08 gears. After close to 14yrs it stayed that way. Then I started changes the gears first to a 3.70 to a 4.56 with a final of a 5.13 .As a daily driver it had a Offey & a 600 holley. Then Like the gears I went from the offey to a clifford dual 4b which had 2 450 holleys Then I went to
my custom 3x4 tunnel ram intake It then drank from 3 450 holleys.
and ran a best of like i said 17 plus yrs later 14.3s in 3rd gear with a M20 ****** and 5.13 rear gears.

This new /Fresh Build is with the Old piston from The First build The piston has been Refly cut to clear the Now Much bigger bump stick,
The head is lump ported and fitted with 1.94 on the intake & 1.6 on the exhaust. intake flow is over 250 cfms and the exhaust is flowing over 180 cfms It will still drink from my 12 Pack 3x4 tunnel ram LOL

what else would you like to know.:) An Yes i have video Hehe Them pour 'Ole vthings don't like me to well LOL.

I have "How to Hop Up Chevrolet and GMC Engines" sitting here in front of me. It's a reprint of Roger Huntington's 1951 book. Send me an address and I'll drop it in the mail tomorrow. Early Ford on Summer Avenue has Memphis has "California Bills" book for $10. All their books are half price during July.

Heepster, way too cool of you. Sent you a PM, thanks a ton.
Tman, I have not started a build yet, but I got a line on a model a pickup, and another line on a gmc in what looks like a 2 ton truck. I could not see what size it was because it was getting dark. I have always wanted one of the big gmc sixes. I think they are the coolest motor ever.

Waste of time & money as far as I'm concerned. I had a 50 chev vert that I put a 270 w/3/4 cam clark headers/truck mufflers, lincoln intake valves, sodium exhaust valves & bored & 2 worked over stromberg 97s continental kit & goodyear double eagles . My friend put a olds rocket 88 in his 50 pontiac club coupe & he was stock. He could stay on my *** but couldn't get around me & i couldn't get away. He was stock junkyard dog & I had a ton of money in mine.[IMG]
