I've got a running 50 ford thats been sitting around my yard for about over a year now and I really wanna get on the road. She will start right up, just smokes fairly bad and the last time it was street legal was 1979. I've had it on the road about 4 times for a total of about 5 miles and she seemed to do 40mph just fine but then my brakes went out and scared the **** outta me so I've parked her for a while been parked since. What would you guys do to "freshen" up the motor a bit. Not really interested in performance just want it to run ok so I can dump money into the body/ch***is and worry about an engine swap later.

Heres a couple ****py videos of the engine...

If it runs, but smokes, just keep running it. Chances are it will loosen up the rings on its own & the smoking will diminish over time somewhat.

    Yah - what Flat sez.

I had an engine that appeard bad (low compression in two holes) and after tearing it down, the only problem I could find was stuck rings. Since then, I've made it a hapbit with marginal motors to run some motor flush thru them to loosen up the sludge, then give them an oil change. I've managed to avoid a couple of rebuilds thataway.

if it still smokes after running it a while after a flush (a couple hundred miles) the next 'trick' I've used is oil treatment. With Lucas oil, you can go as high as a 50/50 mix of oil and oil treatment. I had a Ford 170 six that would eat a quart of oil per tank of gas, and oil foul its plugs once a week. When filled with a 50/50 oil and treatment ****tail both oil consumption and plug fouling stopped.

    Turned over real slow, tho...

Change oil, add four quarts of HD 30 wt. and a pint of Marvel oil or CD2. Drive it all summer, it may be better soon by itself.

If your gonna follow the above,
at least do some of the obvious tune-up procedures like-
-get some carb cleaner and spray it in there while running
-at least check the plugs and clean/regap or replace
-flush out the water if its rusty
    -check timing/points.

If its been sittin that long, its worth at least that.

So far I have changed the coolant, oil, plugs, wires, cap, rotor, coil, battery, fuel pump (it was bad when I got it) and rebuilt the carb (although its still ****ing too much air when you first press the pedal I have a second carb I need to rebuild and try on it). I need to drop the tank and clean it out or replace it with a mustang tank because my dinky inline filter gets clogged very fast. I also need to find a better mount for the generator or switch to an alternator set up because the flismy one its on twists with the tension of the belt.

I'll try flushing the engine and using the oil additive mixes mentioned above see if that helps.
