My Dad is about done doing the 1964-66 "the Surfer's" car.

He cant find the right kill switch.

Tom Jobe used a open single pull switch he bought at SEARS in 1964.........it's like an old house main switch like the ones in frankenstein movie , but alot smaller it has a white ceramic base 2"x 1" 1/2 inches and with a single 2" inch lever that was dipped or had plastic to insulate you from power , a primative toggle switch, could have been used for alot of things in house ,auto machine, anyone have one??? please let me know salinasboy@aol.com or call 831 424-7753
    THANKYOU!- Cole

Sorry man...no idea. I really dig the surfer's car. They wrote a story about it a few years back.

I can dig through my Dad's stash of old oddball electrical stuff for ya...might find something like that!

I dug up this groovy blade type switch...might use it for my fuel pump!!! [IMG] [IMG]

Are you talking about a knife switch (not to be confused with a switchblade!)?

If so, lots of sources on the web...

Edit*** like what Fat Hack is showing...

  5. I just saw a switch like that in the new J C Whinty calaloge.

That one even has an "accessory" position! [IMG]

I was searching too and one seller said
"Our stock of all knife switches but p/n 845 is now exhausted, and we see no hope of future stock, since Leviton has ceased to produce them. There are still a smattering of various types in the ham fest flea markets, so keep alert for them."

Call Cal-Aero in Paramount and see if they have one. they have lots of "odd" and surplus stuff there.

  12. Know any electrical utility workers?
PG&E in your area I think.
The ones to talk to are electricians and test technicians.
These folks work in the power stations proper.

The utilities use a similar switch behind the switchboards to kill power to relays etc.
Most times they have lots of the single pole single throw knife switches kicking around.
More than likely they'd pass one on for a good cause.

Another excellent source for these are electronic surplus stores and old hardware stores. (The kind with creaky wooden floors and bulk fasteners etc.)

  13. Cole: Just so happens I work for PG&E so I will check with the electricians & relay techs at work and see what we can come up with. We have the ones like UnklIans post all over our switch yard as potential cutouts. I can also check with the electric supply house in Monterey and there is an OLD place in PG I think. If I can get one I'll drop it by the shop for you, I'm back at work mMonday so I'll do some digging around. Oh yeah and did you get the flyer for the Strangers BBQ? I shoved one under your door......

Is Jobe making a new wooden wing for the front too?
Man, I can't wait to see Adam Sorokin fire that mutha up at cacklefest! His daddy would be proud!

I knew they went to the right man when they went to Patty. This attention to detail on the knife switch confirms it! [IMG]

For those who don't know, you can read about the build here.

Hey Cole, I've been friends with Adam Sorokin, for 30 years now. He's spoke about you to me several times. I'm very [IMG]jazzed to see this car being put together. I know how excited Adam is about it. Good luck and i can't wait to see the finished car. KK

Adam and I both have something in common. We've both parked our asses in a Surfer's car. [IMG]

Cole, let us know if you find the switch. One of the guys on Nitrogeezers thought he may have one and was going to check today.

    Cole,
I am looking around at some old Hardware stores for the Knife switch. And I have emailed a couple of other guys that are looking also. It is pretty hard to find, I have been calling around and everyone has the same comment "I used to have ton's of them, but I have not seen them for years". I have also been told that you can order them, but I think they are the plastic ones. I will check one more source in downtown Kansas City today ( Architecture Salvage ).

  28. Cole could you post a pic of the car?
Nice interview on the Mad Fab DVD!!

  29. Maybe if I look around I'll find a link...DUH!! dragster

  30. Cole: Talked with one of our relay techs yesterday and he is going to dig around at one of our main parts depots and see if there are any laying around as they have loads of old shit laying around. He said the new ones are different that we use now but maybe we'll get lucky and dig one up, I'll keep looking.
