Maybe not a HAMB kinda project (although some parts are definitely old school), I found this on Ebay and wound up getting it for him. It's a great project for him to learn the basics since there's really nothing more basic than this. It's painfully stock.. not even a radio. It was a sevice vehicle for a John Deere dealer in Mesa, AZ. With 104,000 miles, a 170ci 6, three on the tree, and NO RUST whatsoever, it was worth the whole $1300. Now if I can just talk him into making it an Econoline g***er.....
You're right, it is kind of unusual, but that's the only reason I bought it for him. If it didn't have ANY gl*** on the right, imagine the size of that blind spot. And a green 16 YO driver behind the wheel? No bueno. I think this'll be good for a first car and enhance his social life. He doesn't seem to thnk his girlfriend will ride in it. Oh well, next........
that van rules...endless possibilites...just tell him chopper dave has one, but no windows....WOW thats one nice van
Reminds me of my brother's Corvair in high school. He installed a couch, carpet and cushions. No g***er, just a rolling bedroom!
just tell him to lower it a few inches, put some 16" steelies on it and have fun... (with all the neighbor girls..)
i remember serving my "plumbers aprenticeship" in the back of one of those. i still have a 65' econoline pickup. if you do nothing else to it UPGRADE! the brakes. their is a yahoo site for oldeconolines.com and one of the members has a disc brake kit for them. i think his name is dennis and he lives in oregon. that thing rocks!
If he decides to black out all the windows and starts taking sewing cl***es and watching Silence of the Lambs all the time, be wary.
A friend of mine had one of those with a 351C swapped in. The doghouse had to be enlarged, and the driveshaft was about 18" long, but it would scoot. The steering got a little squirrelly when you were hard in the throttle.
Those are fun to drive. My Dad had one of those back in the 70's as a work van. It was metallic blue window van with Cragars and wide tires. We went everywhere in that thing man.
My dad had a few of those when i was growing up and so did my uncle, My dads were more of a work van. My uncles were more of a love machine with **** carpet, cool wheels and a bed in the back....oh and red lights that flashed to the beat of the 8 track stereo. ...........
Another idea, one of my fathers mates inherited a VW bus, had a spare 400 chev out of his old race car, whaddya do? Yup rear mounted 800hp 400 chev. Man it was funny to see that thing carry the fronts off the light on the street (Not that I encourage it, but it was cool!) He ended up dropping that motor in a short wheelbase Range rover, that was even funnier picking the rear wheels up in reverse!
I pulled a front (185-70r14) and a rear (235-60r15) off the 68 today and put them on the kids van so he can see what bigs and littles look like. Gave it a kind of g***er look and the kid LOVES it. That's my boy
My dad had one of those, with a Boss 351 Cleveland, custom 4x4 set up, those plastic summit racing seats, and a wicked 8 track stereo set-up from the 80's. He ended up sellin' it to a guy who turned it into a storage shed on wheels, it really ****ed. Good luck with it. ECONOLINES KICK ***!!! bobby
He'll be the most popular kid at school... with the ladies! He needs to get a bumper sticker that reads "Don't laugh, your daughter might be in here!" Sam.
Oh, HELL-NO!! That van is cool as HELL!! I'm jealous as heck, too... My first car was an AMC Gremlin... (and yes, I wish I had it back...have you seen the ebay prices for them lately??)
Holy **** dude, a teen with a VAN? You better have a talk with that boy! Nice purchase, love Econos. (She likes them too!)
that thing is way cool! I see lots of Loong talks with the young ladies Old Man. If a boy showed up to pick up my soon to be step daughter in on of those, I would probably have that talk cleaning a shotgun. wish I had one when I was in highschool....
Very cool first car. I'm just glad he's in Arizona and my almost 15 year old daughter is here in Illinois. No offense, I've got enough to worry about. btw - We're working on her first car, a 71 Super Beetle convert. It's weird but she likes it.
super cool. a perfect ride for a new driver. If the girlfriend won't ride in it, he can find another one who will. -W
